Printing a card game

Hello,

I would like to create a card game based on a Microsoft game's content for a personal, noncommercial use.

However, this would require a third-party printing company to print out the cards. Do the rules described at https://www.xbox.com/en-us/developers/rules cover this case, or is a license needed?

Reading through the link you provided, that covers digital usage rights, not creation of physical items which falls under their Brand guidelines.

Yes it would make sense, even though I cannot find an explicit mention stating that.

So I guess I could try acquiring a license (which may be hard to do as an individual) or print the cards myself...

Having worked with a number of printing companies over the years, you're going to want to speak with the printer as well about the project and what they will require.

Many shops will require a license/letter from the copyright holder regardless as they want ensure they are protected from any legal liabilities.

Those guidelines clearly states "However, our logos, app and product icons, illustrations, photographs, videos, and designs can never be used without an express license."

I'm not a lawyer so could be wrong but, using a 3rd party to print something for your own personal use would, I imagine, fall under this:

"We don't mind if other people help you out, but you have to be clear with them that it's not you giving permission to use the Game Content, it's us. And like you, they can't earn money from their efforts, except as permitted by these Rules."

Whilst it's not stipulated about a 3rd party printer, they would surely fall under people helping you out. Although, of course, if you are paying them, then it would contravene that. To me, it seems a very grey area. Most prudent thing to do might be to email them at the email address on that page to clarify what is needed
