    I cannot use my MONEY in the microsoft account to purchase xbox live gold membership

    this is not new as most services have clear prepaid and billing options

    prepaid usually costs more

    You need to log in on account.microsoft.com with the account that has Xbox Live, and select services and subscriptions. Scroll down to the subscription, and select manage, then select turn off auto renew. This will stop any future payments and you will
    be able to then use the prepaid subscription card to continue with Xbox Live. And no he will not lose any of his free games if you continue using the prepaid subscriptions cards.
