Preowned games?

^^ What about all of the other employees at Epic (or any video game developer) that are scraping by? Shouldn't they be rewarded for the work they did? I'm not saying you should or should not buy used games, but it isn't so black & white as people make
it out to be.

@Dr Black Bones -- EA stopped doing their online passes a few years ago.

 

How do you know they are scraping by? They could be payed minimum wage like a most of the population or payed by award rate or they could be under a contract agreement. Hey they could be scraping but it could be due to completely different circumstances.

 

I think buying used games is a good thing. Have only had my XBox since Christmas, and started with almost all digital games, and still do buy digital games when the price is right (as per the latest game delas, sniper elite 3 etc). But in the last month
I have bought 12 xbox one games from ebay, games that I probably would not have brought at all at full price, and as some one has already mentioned, for sme of them, there is now a good chance I will by sequels. With regard to rewarding developers, there
needs to be a little bit of "wake up and smell the coffee", good games will sell, mediocre ones will sell but not so much and bad ones not well at all and to some extent, thats how good developers get paid well and lesser ones not so. I am actually a developer
of several decades, though not in Games industry, but what experience has (sadly) showed me is that the bigger companies get, the more there is even bigger drive to cut costs and reduce overheads and so cut staff, this is a reflection on the "big companies"
rather than the poor individuals in the "trenches". So if it comes down to "please buy new so EA can have more of my money, whilst I have to save hard to buy new games", I am afraid, that's a non starter argument. It is also worth pointing out, that for
those not so financially blessed, reselling games you brought allows you to buy more games you could possibly not afford otherwise

This is a common misconception among forum users.

Games are commisioned by the Publisher.

They pay the developer and the costs of the game, including profit, are made when the game is sold to retailers, not you.

Sure, sell more copies, make more money, but believing 2nd hand sales harm developers is not just naiive, it's comlpetely incorrect.

You can understand why Publishing Executives would like you to think this was the case though.

That just isn't true.

Any sale of a used title goes to the store selling the used game. Nothing goes to the developer from the sale.

And technically you're buying the license to play the game. Not the game itself.

Don't be surprised when this policy
makes a comeback.

When everything goes digital, all of these used games stores will go out of business.

 

I suggest you read the post by Azrael.. And I'm well aware of wher the money goes for second hand sales. You seem to have missed the point of my post.

 

It is black and white though. Make a game that has value and people WANT to own or play for a long enough time to make reselling them pointless and you've put a huge dent in used game sales.

I only buy new games (Unless it's so old of a game it can't be found anymore.), but have no problem selling them off if they didn't meet my expectations. I only wish that digital could be sold off...would've gladly sold back The Escapists for a slight recoup
of what was paid.

Still don't know why used game sales are such a problem though, as saving $5.00 off the cost of new doesn't intrigue me one bit.
