preorders and split payments

I understand you need help on your pre order charge problem.

If the game has already been released, you cannot make the purchase anymore for pre-order and get the benefits if you opt out to charge this on another payment instrument since that would require you to request for a refund on the charge and buy the game again.

Once the charges are already posted, the only way to get it back is through refund and there is no option to change the payment instrument if the charge has already gone through unfortunately.

I understand it's a one off payment when your order is shipped, no charge is made before despatch. I couldn't find anything regarding any finance option or split payment options.

If you used your account credit to preorder the game, payment should have been taken immediately so it wouldn't matter.

If you used a split payment with the credit and a credit card/Paypal and the credit expires before they can take the payment, it's possible they'll either charge the full amount to the credit card/Paypal or they'll cancel the order if they're not able to charge you.

No, it's always been like that. It's just never been updated for 360 content.

Have you tried to purchase it on Xbox.com instead to see how that goes? If the currency isn't allowing you to use it, then you can't use it for that purchase. Currency in your account can not be used for all products on the Xbox Store.
