Pre-paid XBOX live - cannot connext XBOX 360

Just bought my son an xbox live subscription for XBOX360. Put code into PC and now xbox states code has been redeemed & won't connect. Son is upset as his birthday and can't play his new game. Should I have put this into the XBOX? instructions were really
poor. what can i do?

You can add Microsoft Points pre-paid codes by using the Xbox 360 console or by using Xbox.com.

Xbox 360 console

To enter a pre-paid Microsoft Points code by using the Xbox 360 Guide main menu, follow these steps:
Press the Xbox 360 Guide button, and then go to the Marketplace area.
Select Redeem Code.
Enter the 25-character pre-paid code.
To enter a Microsoft Points code by using the Add Points Wizard, follow these steps:
To access the Add Points Wizard, press the X button while you view any content description screen within the Game Marketplace or Video Marketplace areas or while you view the Memberships section in the Account Management area.
Select Redeem Prepaid Card.
Enter the 25-character pre-paid code.

Visit Sign In (Sign In) or follow these steps:
From Xbox.com, use your Windows Live ID to sign in to your Xbox LIVE account.
Select My Account from the My Xbox drop-down menu.
Click Redeem Code to enter the pre-paid code and add Microsoft Points to your account.

Error code is displayed when trying to use a pre paid Xbox Live subscription code when your Xbox Live gold is still in effect. You must wait for the subscription period to end before you can use the code. Pre Paid subscription codes cannot be used to extend
an Xbox Live subscription, only activate it

When you add gold via the website, there is a delay before the console will recognize it. The delay can last a few hours. To speed up the process, try testing your connection on the console.

If that doesn't work, check

There is no code, it just tells me that xbox cannot connext to online servers everytime I try to play Call of Duty Wodern Warfare.

What types of cards are they? If they are pre-paid credit cards then that may be why they cannot work as most pre-paid cards are not compatible with the Live service.
