Pre loaded game won't play

If you those games were purchased via your son's account, he would have to set the console you have as the "Home" console. This allows him to share gold as well as any games he purchased with other users on the console.

If they are his games you'll need to have him either sign in or make your Xbox his home Xbox

If the games were pre-loaded then they were purchased on someone else's account. If they were purchased on your son's account, he would need to set the console as his Home console in order for you to be able to play them as well. https://support.xbox.com/en-US/games/game-setup/my-home-xbox

What model of Xbox One do you currently have? Would you mind explaining a little more what happens exactly when you try to load up the game? Any error codes or messages, or does the game just crash back to the home screen?

To start of with I suggest trying a complete hard reset and power cycle:
https://support.xbox.com/xbox-one/console/power-cycle-console. Follow that article to perform the power cycle.
