    I am trying to find out which USB cable I need to connect the wireless controller to the console- so as to do an update. We haven't updated the controllers since purchase in June 2015.

    You will need to use a USB to micro-USB cable (or USB to USB-C cable) to connect your controller to Xbox One.

    About updating your controller, it doesn't necessarily need to be connected by USB. It can be connected wirelessly. Here is an official Microsoft guide on how to update it:
