Achievements enabled or is it like KI where they only become available upon purchase of a character/game?

I bought this on release and was well worth the cost, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and now I have the canyons course as a free dlc download it makes the purchase even sweeter, they have added a lot to the game since release.

 

Think this & PvZ are my most played games on the One so far.

PG is definately worth the price tag,liking the new course as well.

Bought this for my son when it was on sale a while back and he's just went to play it and it's not letting him play any course's telling him he has to buy them at £4.49 or the full game at £15.99????

 

I saw it said that this "works like the trial for Killer Instinct," so does that mean you cannot earn achievements on it until you make some purchase? (Either full game, character pack or courses.)

Or did that comment just refer to the similar way in which you can buy the games piecemeal?

 

You'd probably be able to get a few achievements but certainly not all of them without buying the game or courses.

Anybody any ideas why my son can't play this on his profile but I can play it on mine? (I bought the game a while back)
