Power supply shouldn't be plugged into a surge protector??

The
diagram at solution 3 shows that the Xbone shouldn't be plugged into a surge protector, because it has internal surge protection?

What happens if i continue to use the console in a surge protector? Will it explode and rain donuts? I don't remember the console ever coming with such a warning.

I sorta like the idea of being double covered, but if its going to harm the console in any way, I'd like to know sooner than later.

Also, does this apply to the 360 power supply?

Hey, ConfusedMoon0. Sorry you're running into a power issue, but this thread is kind of old. I suggest making a new thread detailing your issue. Since the console isn't out in South Africa yet, the support is limited, though.

is your xbox one plugged into a surge protector? The xbox one has surge protection built into the power supply and if it's plugged into a surge protector you may have problems. Try plugging it into the wall or a different outlet.

 

Sorry... no raining of donuts... but I would not recomend plugging the xbox one psu into a surgeprotector as this might dammage the console.. MS does reccomend plugging the psu directly into a wall outlet, but from my exoerience with the 360 and the One
a plain power strip WITHOUT a surgeprotector shoul not give you any grief.. I've had to resort to this beacause of a lack of outlets near my tv..

but do not use a damaged powerstrip and be carefull not to overload the wall outlet...

It is 100% not a good idea to plug into a Surge Protector. This has actually been a BIG no-no since the 360, because the 360 PSU and the X1 PSU both have a built-in surge protector. What happens is, even with a brand new power strip/surge protector in Mint
condition, by plugging the PSU into it, then it into the wall, you are putting two layers of surge protection between the wall and the console. This effectively chokes the power flow, which is very dangerous especially during the startup routines, when the
console actually needs additional power above its normal operating requirements.

Over time, the reduced flow of power can cause issues with the console, including complete failure of specific components, rendering the console unable to function. This was actually one of the leading causes of RRoD on the Xbox 360, such that MS actually
had to amend the setup instructions (and the help documentation) to specifically say NOT to use a surge protector (and they continued this with the Xbox One.) I have also seen numerous reports of people with things like startup failures and drive failures,
who ended up tracing their issue back to the fact that they were using a separate surge protector. (In many cases, eliminating the surge protector fixed the issue, but for a few, it was too late.)

It does feel very odd to NOT use a power supply and go straight to the wall, especially with sophisticated electronics, but speaking from experience, it can cause lots of problems!

 

What if you don't have an available outlet nearby, because the one you're using is occupied? Any setup is lucky to have two available outlets nearby.

I think its going a bit far to say it actually damages the console, I'm not dropping it or anything. Plugging it directly into a wall just seems like a bad idea.. i mean, there is no ground (third prong) to prevent electrocution.

 

Two completely different reasons are given for why you should not be using a protector. First it can cause changes or interruptions and other problems that create of compolicate the failure/problem.

Second, protectors too close to any appliance can compromise exiting internal protection. A proector can even give a surge more paths to get destructively inside appliances - including Xbox.

Others foolishly assume the adjacent power strip will magically block or absorb a surge. How does that 2 cm part stip what three miles of sky could not? It doesn't. How do its hundreds of joules absorb surges that are hundreds of thousands of joules?
It cannot.

You should learn of something completely different (unfortunately also called a surge protector) that does proven protection of the Xbox and all other household appliances. This other solution is also necessary to protect an adjacent and undersized power
strip protector.

Your concern about no third prong is somewhere between bogus and irrelevant. Best power comes from a direct wall connection. Protector can even make Xbox damage easier during a surge.

 

If you don't have an available outlet nearby, you really need to position it somewhere that you do. Believe me, it's not going "too far" to say it will damage the console. We're not speaking hypothetically, it actually does and has happened, trust me.

It is, however, completely safe to use a good insulated extension cord - if you happen to be in the type of setup where you absolutely HAVE to put the console somewhere where there are no available wall outlets, you can run an extension cord around the perimeter
of the room to another outlet. You mention you would be lucky to have two available wall outlets - you really only need one. Anything else can be plugged into the power strip, just not the Xbox.
