Power supply noise (Broken fan?)

A few days ago the power supply for my xbox one began making a loud mechanical whirring noise. It was already plugged into a wall outlet so overload shouldn't have been a problem. When turned on it's side, it makes an even louder sound, like a car shifting
onto a lower gear.

I've seen other posts about similar problems but never any solutions. Should I try submitting a repair order to see if Microsoft will replace the power supply or would I be better off just dropping $70 on a new one?

There may indeed be a problem with a PSU fan if it's making an unusually loud whirring noise. Firstly, is there enough ventilation space around the power supply? The PSU needs "breathing room" to get rid of the heat building up inside, much like the console.

It's always best to check how much a warranty repair will cost before you decide to outright replace your PSU. The power supply is registered with your console's serial number on your account (see
here). Go through the process of setting up a repair for your PSU to see how much it'll eventually cost you (there should be a quote somewhere at the end).

Since Microsoft doesn't separately sell Xbox One power supplies, you can also contact

Xbox Support (chat or phone) to get a replacement.
