I have no idea what it is, but it sounds like a dying fan. I have no idea if there's a fan in there, but that's what it sounds like. Is this something covered under warranty? Do I really have to send in my whole console just to get this problem fixed?
    What is wrong here?

Yes, it's because you have the console set to Instant On mode. This keeps the console in a very-low power state (rather than being completely off), to enable it to do overnight updates so that you never have to see any update screens yourself. It will keep
the console OS updated, as well as downloading and installing all the latest title updates for games and apps.

If you wish to cease this behaviour, go to Settings then Power & Startup and switch the power mode to Energy Saving. This will make it behave more like your 360, but you will need to sit through update screens when those need to be downloaded and installed,
and like on 360 if you are online when an update is made mandatory you will be kicked offline to perform this update.
