    Post your ping times!

I figured if MS sees all the various ping times people are receiving all in one place then they should be able to figure out their issues at least geography kind of like cloud sourcing their issues. I suggest we post out "detailed network statistics" from
our Xbox onesand also our location. It is in settings>network>detailed network statistics. I'll start with mine of course.

    Down-88.45 Mbps out of 105.

    Up-11.96 Mbps out of 12

    Packet loss 0%

    Mtu 1480

    Latency 88 ms

    Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

    ISP- Comcast

CO - less then a mile away

Now you don't have to add all the info if you don't know or don't want to share but at least latency and geographic location.

But anyone who knows anything about ping times over the Internet knows that 88ms is ridiculous. Either they have me connecting to servers in Death Valley or servers in Ireland or they have major issues with their servers. Either way it needs to be fixed.

    :)

  2. DNS Error

Can you ping your xbox from your PC?

From a command prompt, type Ping 192.168.1.2 and post the results

    Connection. What is you ping??

My thread should ask what is your ping? It's hard to post from a iPhone.

I'm picking the lowest ping it's the west coast one. I'm curious if you live closer what your ping is.

  4. Post your ping times!

The ping provided by the Xbox in the Network tab has
no meaning at all, it is pinging the Xbox servers in Washington where the Microsoft campus is. People who live on the other side of the world (or in your case a different state) also ping to those servers and this can give a false image
of the actual ping they have in games.

If you want accurate ping I suggest going to
    http://www.speedtest.net/
    and choosing a local server.

If you have any connection issues or experience lag during gameplay I suggest making a new post stating those issues for troubleshooting purposes

  5. FearedNightmare is correct, all the network tests are done from a single location.

Though I still think it's a nice idea for a thread. It gives people a point of reference for the ping from their location. It's all very well saying "your ping's high because you so far from Washington." but that doesn't mean your ping is not being affected
    by other factors.

My Network tests usually give the following results:

    D/L: ~150Mbps

    U/L: ~11Mbps

    Ping: #105ms

    Packet Loss: 0-1%

    MTU: 1480

    ISP: Virgin Media

    Location: UK

Then my next door neighbour had a ping of around 300-400, turned out his cable was corroded.

    @feared nightmare

Is this not a forum? I mean I am starting a thread to get more information all in one spot if not for my own intrestest but others. I don't need it to be moderated and closed down. I didn't ask for it to be answered or was I looking for a specific answer.
I am feeling that by you coming in here and delegitimizing my post I am being bullied from my own thread.

Also the ping latency in the Xbox tab having no meaning at all? I think the person who put that there would beg the differ. If we all ping to servers in Washington don't you think that itself needs to be fixed? Queue that up for resolution. Having that
in there "if your right" and everyone pinging servers in Washington is idiocracy.

Also going to speedrest is a "false image" because you pinging something other then the Xbox servers that you obviously want to. So simply sending me or others to ping other people's servers and hoping that passes off as an accurate latency test for an Xbox
to and Xbox live server to me is a rat hole your sending us all down with a lump of fake cheese at the end.

I rather not be bullied out of my thread and allow it to grow to see the results. And if it does it will die naturally by not being bumped. Not prematurely be closed because you think it serves no purpose it seems someone responded already and thought it
    was a good idea.

    Big Jeff V,

I'm sorry to hear that you feel that you are being bullied out from your own thread, and I don't think that was anyone's purpose here at all. Let's not jump to conclusions when someone else adds their opinion.

Please note that you have posted this thread in a Support Forum and the idea of a Support Forum is designed in a way that usually uses a 'Question and Answer' type format. It is designed for people with a specific issue to seek help on that issue, usually
in the form of one definitive answer. There are other sections of the forums that are designed for discussion. This is likely why one of the previous posters tried to post on the thread with a type of 'answer' to what he deemed to be a 'question', due to the
Forum that it was posted in.

However, FearedNightmare is correct in that everyone's ping test on the Console goes to one server and is therefore not an accurate representation of ping during actual online gameplay, as the servers that are used for such services are distributed across
various locations and will therefore have different ping response times/latency. So he is correct in saying what he did, and that does not mean that it's a fictitious Rat Hole, it's actually a fair explanation on how the gamer servers work.

It's also important to note that Ping can be affected by other factors (such as in the example provided above by SN1P3R SK33T), and that it is not always about geography or location.

I totally agree with you that you have every right to create a thread to promote discussion on the idea, there is no issue there. Just be careful that you're not incorrectly labelling the issue as solely a geographical issue when it's not. Also, it may pay
to use a discussion forum for similar posts in future, rather than a Support Forum, to avoid the confusion that you've had above and to avoid causing anyone any discomfort.

Whilst I'm here - I will add to your thread for your benefit.

    My latency: 216ms

    My location: New Zealand

If you want to run an independent speed test of your consoles, use
    http://speedof.me
... it uses HTML5 and thus doesn't need plug-ins that aren't available on the IE apps on either console.

@paraffin So Glad you responded with your times I knew someone would chime in with some evidence.

So I am being told that all pings go to Settle WA in the States. For you to ping that distance in 15-20ms is physically impossible. I mean you are traveling across the Atlantic then across the entire USA. What I believe is that either your not pinging Settle
WA like we are being told or you have a direct connection to their servers there. Must have given you a VIP line or something. I mean through all the carriers your being treated as if you were presidential like traffic. Or something.

Now of course the ladder is ridiculous and I believe your right your getting 15ms to a local live server which would make more sense. I am sure I am not pinging Settle WA either contrary to what we are being told on here. So either Xbox wised up in the past
few days and fixed it or I was right all along.

Also @Randy running a ping test from the xbox is not an issue its running a ping test to live servers showing actual latency in multiplayer gaming. You can run a ping from your computer to xbox live servers and that would serve the same purpose. The source
is the same no matter what device your using. Everything on your home network is NAT'd behind a single IP anyway the live server would only see your WAN IP. What matters is the destination that is what is questionable. That is what matters, that is where the
meat and potatoes are at. If the live servers are slow to respond or having trouble to respond then its their issue. This is a reason why I believe it we may never have this ability and it will stay vague and we will continue to be misled to thinking everyone
in the world pings a single server in Settle. Not only does that not even sound right but it seems ignorant on its face. Even on a network or resource stand point. I would rather load balance across all servers ICMP from users doing network tests rather then
have everyone effectively DDoS a poor server in Settle. Even if you visualized it in an entire datacenter in Settle you would still have a bottle neck from your ISP providing internet service. Poor design IF it were true.......

  14. @ Big Jeff V - My connection speed/ping check is always done through my local server which is approximately 30 miles away from my home address.

The worst ping result I have ever received has been around the 40ms mark.
