Positioning of Xbox One S for Ventilation

So I'm about to get an Xbox One S and also a Nintendo Switch.. Im planning on setting them up in a wardrobe that's about 150cm tall by 70cm wide. Because I've got two young kids, I need to have the front of the cupboard
closed, even when I'm using the Xbox to watch DVDs and what not while they're awake. So I've decided to take the back of the cupboard completely off for ventilation reasons, the cupboard is positioned on a diagnol in the very corner of the room and there'll
probably be a 80cm gap from the corner of the walls to the back of the consoles. Above the consoles is my 48 inch T.V that heats up quite a bit. So finally, my question is – will this be enough ventilation for the xbox or will the heat get trapped? I won't
be playing for mass amounts of time, generally 2-4 hours while the kids are in bed, or maybe once in a blue moon I'll be able to play longer.

I would personally not advise putting anything on top of your Xbox One S console as there is always a possibility that the drive could move by accident and block the console ventilation holes.

You should check if you have the XBOX in a properly ventilated area. Also, if the XBOX is in the correct position, it's recommended not to do that standing up position like on the advertisements on XBOX; but to put it sideways where it could be properly
ventilated.

• Place the console on a stable surface.
• Do
  not
  place the console on speakers or subwoofers.
• The console should be in a well-ventilated, relatively cool place and
  away from direct heat sources.
• The space should be uncluttered.
• Do
  not
  put other objects on, under, or right next to the console.
  • For example, don’t put an object on the top right of your Xbox One console. This may block the
    vents and cause your console to overheat.

The Xbox One S is mainly ventilated through the circular hole on top, and the sides of the console. I wouldn't recommend keeping it inside a closed space, but if it's getting fresh, cool air from somewhere, and the console is not shutting itself down to
protect from overheating, then it should be okay.

 

The xbox will turn off automatically if the temperature raises too high, so that might make you feel a bit better about trial and error. If things do get too hot, you might also want to consider a small fan to circulate air in the wardrobe.

 

Okay so probably a good idea to have the door open while im playing and the kids are in bed.. atleast there'll be air flow from back and front.. but how much heat will it produce while only watching DVDs? Because that's the time I'll likely be using it
while the kids are up and watching something with me and I'll have to have the door closed

 

It's always going to produce heat - if you've ever used a laptop, just think how warm it gets when it's just sitting on your lap. It's hard to say how much it'll produce, and if you'll have enough air flow to keep it cool. Your best bet is just trial
and error. Even opening the door a crack if possible helps.

 

Yeah fair point, I think I'll get a desk fan and put it in there aswell
