  1. Pondering Backwards Compatibility

I've been thinking that engineering backwards compatibility on the Xbox One is obviously impossible. I mean, you would have to dynamically translate PPC64 machine code to AMD64. And with the Xenon going at 3.2 GHz, that's obviously impossible on the Xbox
One's Jaguar CPU which runs nowhere near that fast.

Now this here is the big fallacy. Most people think the One just has a CPU and a GPU thrown together on one die, but after investigation it seems to be so much more than that. Upon finding out that this chip has an IOMMU unit in it, it seems almost certain
that this processor is, in fact, HSA-capable. What this means is that the CPU cores and GPU cores are merged together, and furthermore, they can all work together on the same problem at the same time. There is no need to transfer vectors between the CPU
and GPU address spaces. They are all together One processor. This may be, in fact, where the console received its name.

So now we know (barely beyond a reasonable doubt) that we have seamless access to the console's GPU power to translate PPC64 into AMD64. But we're not out of the woods yet. GPU power tends to be useless when calculating the wrong type of problems. In
other words, GPU power is awesome, but it's almost worthless for translating machine code.

At least the sequential way in which most people go about it. If you want to use the GPU for emulation, the problem has to be profoundly restructured and re-engineered to be parallel in nature. In other words, the task of machine code translation needs
to be expressed in terms of a series of mathematical operations.

I'm still going over the issue of branching and register access in my head...

    :)

  4. Pondering Backwards Compatibility

Hello "wswartzendruber" Pondering Backwards Compatibility :)

The primary focus of Microsoft should be making sure that the Xbox One console continues to run smoothly and that they fix the problems / issues that arises.

If this can be achieved without causing any negetive effects on the primary focus which I mentioned in the last paragraph, then "backwards compatibility" would be a nice bonus indeed Pondering Backwards Compatibility :)

However, with that being said, the end results of "backwards compatibility" typically ends up being incredibly buggy / glitchy; thus making this effort (backwards compatibility) just a waste of time & money.

Please don't be mad / angry at me because I'm just being realistic with the current situation regarding this issue (backwards compatibility) on the Xbox One.

Have a nice day or afternoon or night Pondering Backwards Compatibility :)

  5. Backwards compatibility would be nice. But, it would cost. And you have these remakes and rumored remakes (some that are definitely coming) that would lose some appeal. Not only that but the Live structure is being set up for the One and those servers.
Take the Halo collection. Those are going to be optimized to use the servers. The Gears games will use the servers. And really, the whole system is set up for that. These games made for the 360 would have some issues due to the One system software that
would be costly to address and get all the issues worked out.

If you want to play Xbox 360 games, buy an Xbox 360. When it comes to the Xbox One, upwards and onwards.

Very well explained somebody throw this man an award.

Anyway as i kind of agree with Egg here that the Xbox One should move on to bigger and better things and move away from last gen but imagine if they did get it to work through a software update like they did with Blu-Ray? it would be a nice feature and would
sell much better than its current state.

Just because some people want to move away fro last gen, does not mean everyone does. I would very much like to keep playing my xbox 360 games, and I'm pretty sure lots of others do too. Seeing how Xbox One sales have been going, the addition of backwards
compatibility would help the Xbox to outsell any other competitors

  9. Hello "The Number Z3RO" Pondering Backwards Compatibility :)

I would like to keep on playing my Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One too, but lets be honest here. The "backwards compatibility" of the Original Xbox games on the Xbox 360 doesn't work that well.

Unfortunately, this is probably going to happend to the "backwards compatibility" of Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One (sorry, I'm just being realistic about the results).

Have a nice day or afternoon or night Pondering Backwards Compatibility :)

  10. Although I genuinely appreciate this post, and the thought behind it, I must say, I've moved on. I kept my 360 for a handful of games I still want to play, but I'd rather see Microsoft put their effort into tuning this console to the max. I just want to
see new IPs that will take advantage of its power.

  12. If a game is worth coming back to, I'd much rather it be redone with better graphics so I can appreciate a lot more instead of playing it outdated.

    Pondering Backwards Compatibility

I am all for those who want backwards compatibility. Me I don't need it. I have my OG Xbox, a 360 E and my Xbox One. As Lei Fang had mentioned. The primary focus should be the evolution of the Xbox One, Xbox One games, apps and community features. If
they some how find the time to add it, great.

Phil Spencer mentioned a while back that there is no way he's just going to let the vast collection of games on the Xbox 360 fade away, but as to what will be done with them all...who knows.

I've definitely have had a change of heart when it comes to b/c......I had always been of the opinion....WHO CARES. When I go next gen, I'm not looking to play last gen games. I never understood those that clamored so much about this issue. And I've been
good with that position for a long time and went into this new gen with the same mindset.

But recently, I've had a bit of a change of heart....and it has to do with just how slow this new generation is rolling out. CLEARLY, no one was ready for this new gen in Nov 2013.....not MS, not Sony, and no one in the game development community. The
entire industry clearly needed at least another 6 months before launching.

Switching from a platform that has literally 1000's of games to a platform that has about 30 (at launch)....and of those 30, not too many good ones, is very hard to take. I was one who sold my 360 and all my games on Ebay and have been missing a lot of
those games ever since because there has been very little in new gen.

There were rumors a few months back that MS has put this idea of b/c back on the table.....and you can understand why.....it would be a HUGE selling point when Sony does not have it, and a huge selling point for 360 owners who still hadnt decided to jump
into next gen. But obviously as we get further and further into this new gen and more and more games eventually roll out, b/c starts to rapidly lose it's appeal again.
