PLZ HELP! Cannot format my external HDD within Manage Storage

Hello

I have a Hitach 500GB USB 3.0 external hard drive that I used to use with my mac. Since my internal storage is already fulled, I decided to use it with my Xbox One instead.

I formatted it already as FAT (it reads FAT32 tho, see attached picture) I plugged it to my XBox One and showed only for Media so I proceeded to Format it for games. When I enter the option to do so, I put the name of the storage, then select to install all
next files in the external hdd, and then when i press format now, nothing happens, just goes back to the selections of Interal External storage.

Am I doing something wrong? Please.

I formatted with my Mac with Yosemite using the Disk Utility.

Xbox one won't store games on external hard drive

Go into settings/system click on manage storage is your external showing there if it is click on it go to format.

If it doesn't show in manage storage plug it into computer/laptop and format plug back into console then do as above

Remember you cannot mix media files with games/apps media files need separate hdd/stick.

Hey sorry but yes it does format the drive. I'd still be happy to suggest some drives to you if/when you opt to get an external HDD but until then here is a link to the info covering the external storage.

Are you sure the Hitachi 500GB is USB 3.0?

You may want to verify that again with your Mac.

If Xbone does not recognized the USB 3.0 HDD it will not allow you to format it for games and apps.

With your Mac you might also try to format for NTFS.

Make sure it is USB 3.0 first.

Same issue here 1.3TB Seagate external drive... I've formatted it as NTFS, exFAT and FAT32, Xbox detects the drive each time no issue. But only once (after formatting with a Mac) did it give me the option to format for games.

Running through the format for games option it bombs out once you select format after entering drive name etc, as UnknownPitufo83 describes above.

When I've tried reformatting it again on my Windows machine or Mac, Xbox either says I don't have permission to access the drive to browse it or only gives the option to view content.

I've read elsewhere this could be a partitioning issue but seriously this is starting to drive me nuts, surely the Xbox should be able to format any drive you give it to its format, after all its effectively Windows!

 

This is now resolved! Turns out my USB3 enclosure might not be USB3 after all...the cable may state it is but the chipset isn't, at least not one Xbox recognises as USB3

I bought a new USB3 enclosure and used the same HDD - straight away the Xbox detected, gave me the option to format and the format option worked straight away Old enclosure now in the bin!
