    so my sons xbox was stolen last week and I need to know how to go about obtaining the ip address so that it can be given to my local law enforcement to be able to track it down or can Microsoft track it too

    The only way to get that is to report the theft to your local authorities. They can subpoena the IP from MS to track it.
