PLEASE tell me I just hit the Xbox One Day One Edition Jackpot! I need your expertise and ...

My son has been in the hospital with rhabdomyolysis for weeks. He just came home, but is still bed-ridden. We wanted to throw him a big surprise party, and give him an Xbox One as a tiny token for the suffering he endured. Naturally the medical bills have
nearly broken us. I searched for days and finally found a guy wanting to sell an "Xbox One Day One Edition with Kinect". Well that was everything I wanted (except a few more controllers and games). He asked $200, I paid $200. Really nice guy. I had no
idea the implication of "Day One Edition".

Now that I'm back home and doing research, I'm seeing unopened or barely used Day One Editions Selling for $1750, and one even for $5100! A couple mention having MS360 + Gamertag, but I dont know what that is.

The best part, I finally looked at the box, and it had NEVER been opened. I carefully peeled back both circular pieces of tape, and everything is just as it came from the factory, paperwork and all. It even has the plastic film on the shiny parts.

My instinct (since I'm no collector), is to sell this one, and use the money to get him a 1TB newer model, more games, etc. I have to admit it feels like karma after so much bad happening to him, but I don't want to get my hopes up. I haven't even told
him about the system at all. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Preordering complaint.

If you ordered a Day One edition, they have to deliver a Day One edition. Personally, I would tell them where to go and hit Best Buy.

If your story is true which I'm not sure it is you just sound greedy keep the one you have and give it to your kid.

 

That response is as ignorant as it could possibly be. Like almost every father I give everything I can to my kids. Did you not read the part about "and use the money to get him a 1TB newer model, more games, etc."

What makes you think they're selling for $1750+? If you can find someone dumb enough to pay even half that I'd take the money and run. You can find them on eBay unopened for $400 or less. Or looks like Amazon has them for $370.

You're right about the $1750 and $5100 sold prices on ebay. They have every sign of being fishy. Either way, though, $400 would double what I paid. I could even get a $219.99 Gamestop one, buy a kinect, and have $100 left over for my son to choose his
own games.

 

I typically source ebay for market pricing. Can't see what has actually sold and for how much on Amazon (unless i just dont know about it, which is likely).

Without question, that's a nice gesture on behalf of your bedridden son, and I hope he fully recovers. I've been playing on Xbox for 16 years, and I'm certainly a collector, however I can't see the point of onselling brand new merchandise when in fact you
*have* hit the jackpot by purchasing your (unopened until you opened it, of course) Day One console for $200.

Since you've mentioned the high cost of hospital bills, it makes sense that onselling might recoup some of your expenses, however since there's no pack-in game(s) with your Day One edition, you'd be selling at a loss because these days new consoles come
bundled with bonus games and expanded hard drives. Not to mention the albatross that is Kinect - in fact, unless a collector was specifically looking for the 'full fat' Day One experience, I can't honestly say it's a selling point.

In the end, unless someone has more relevant advice, I'd say keep your Day One console, and value-add to the experience as time goes on. Either way, your son will be thankful.

 

It doesn't sound like you're factoring in eBay fees of 10% or more, or shipping costs. Plus, if you've opened it then it's no longer new.

 

Not that it has been used, but it will be. Doesnt seem to affect prices as long as it's pristine condition. If it sells for more than I paid for it, great... if not... thankfully I still have that 1000 free listing fee thing going on.

 

Seems like a pointless exercise to me after factoring in Ebay fees etc. My advice would be, enjoy your cheap purchase NOW and enjoy letting your son play games on it NOW.

 

Oh he'll play it. I put it up for 400. Ne sell, no fee. where's the downside?
