  1. PLEASE HELP!! Xbox Live Connection Issues

    Hi All,

This isn't your typical 'gamer complaining about lag/connectivity issues' kind of a post… I've actually gone to great lengths (see below) to try and figure out why I'm experiencing such a variance in connectivity and after exhausting all possible resources
I can think of, this is my last ditch effort at trying to resolve this.

My issue: inconsistent connectivity/performance when playing games online (really, the only game I'm playing is NHL 2014). The problem is that 8 out of 10 times when I play (with no correlation to time of day) I experience such ridiculous lag that it's not
even fun to play. What's confusing though is that the other 2 our of 10 times, I get amazing connectivity.

    Set up:

    • Modem: Motorola SURFboard SB6141
    • Router: Netgear WNDR3400
    • ISP: Comcast
    • Bandwidth: average 10-12 Mbps up & 35-40 Mbps down
    • Ping: 20-30 ms
    Steps I've already taken:

    • Set Xbox as DMZ host
    • Turned UPnP on
    • Ethernet direct from Router to Xbox
    • Forwarded all necessary ports (but, was told that was unnecessary with Xbox set as DMZ host, so I deleted all port forwarding rules)
    • Set QOS setting to make Xbox highest priority
    • Cleared Xbox's system cache
    • Updated router firmware (currently: V1.0.0.22_1.0.29)
    • Changed DNS settings to use Google (8.8.8.8) as primary and OpenDNS (208.67.222.222) as secondary
    • Turned IPv6 off
    • Set NAT Filtering to Open and disabled SIP ALG
    • Played with variable MTU Sizes (between 1400 − 1500; increments of 8)
    • Set router as DHCP Server
    • Gone through the Xbox "Troubleshooting Your Connection" steps NUMEROUS times
    • Contacted ISP (Comcast) NUMEROUS times; escalated to 'Expert' help
    • Contacted Xbox 360 Networking Support NUMEROUS times (was told it was my old gateway; so I even went out and got a brand new modem/router set up (above) and saw no improvement)
    • Contacted Netgear tech support NUMEROUS times
    • Contacted Motorola tech support NUMEROUS times
    • And yes - it should go without saying that I've power cycled my modem/router (regularly), as well as gone as far as restoring factory settings to the router and starting from scratch multiple times as well
I'm sure there's even more steps that I've taken that I'm not thinking of right now, but this gives you an idea of the lengths that I've gone to for a resolution to this FRUSTRATING issue. I've researched every forum, guide, etc. I could possibly find online
and like I said above, this is my last hope.

I'm hoping someone out there might be able to: A) suggest something I could try that I haven't already; B) suggest a setting/step I've taken (per above) that might be hurting, rather than helping; C) sell me a baseball bat, so that I can demolish my Xbox
once and for all, to ensure that I never allow myself to get this level of frustration again!

Thanks in advance for any/all suggestions, tips, help, etc.

    :)

PLEASE HELP!! Xbox Live Connection Issues

    Hello, DONkEYxHoCKEY52

"This device [router] can have a few wireless issues (random disconnections, poor signal strength, etc). To resolve this go to Advanced wireless and change the Preamble mode from long to short." If that doesn't resolve any issues. try a direct Ethernet connection
to the modem. If after you try a direct connection to the modem and notice improvement, then resetting the router to defaults may be a solution. If no improvement is to be found, then you may have a problem with your network device.

Try changing your router's channel to a non-standard number, like 11 or 4.

  6. @heldbowl3 - I'm already directly connected via ethernet (xbox to router), so it's not a wireless issue. Both my router and modem are barely a month old and netgear tech support has run multiple diagnostic tests for me and identified no issues at all, so
it's I'm hesitant to settle with attributing the issue to my network device. (that's the conclusion that Xbox tech support originally arrived at, which is why I went out and bought a brand new modem/router)

    I'm at a loss...

  7. @DrakkenSaer - can you expand at all? I'm a bit of an amateur when it comes to this stuff. Wouldn't changing my router's channel only be relevant if I was connecting via wireless? If I'm directly connected, does the channel matter?

I appreciate any additional help you might be willing to offer (please!)

PLEASE HELP!! Xbox Live Connection Issues

I mean, connect your Xbox directly to the modem, (not the router), and see if you notice improvement. If there is still an issue, then it could mean there is a problem with the device or internet line. If your issue is fixed, than there is a problem with
the router, perhaps the configuration therefore resetting the router to factory defaults could fix the issue/

I was able to log back in by resetting my modem gateway. Maybe you should try the same. Hope this helps!

  11. @heldbowl3 - my fault, I completely misunderstood. That's a good idea and definitely worth a try. I've already restored the router to factory defaults though a number of times (thinking that somehow my adjustments to the settings (as described in my original
post) may have been what are causing the issues) and unfortunately, no changes. But, if I'm able to get a strong/consistent connection when bypassing the router and directly connecting modem to xbox, then at least I can narrow down the issue to the router.
Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes!

Restoring the router to factory settings did not help me at all, what i did was to reset the gateway. You can do the gateway reset on the Modem Configuration Manager (http://192.168.100.1) where you set
up your Wifi configuration. I am guessing comcast did an upgrade that messed our connection. So far this method worked for me.

    Hello Mrs NFamous,

Im happy to here your issue is fixed. However, it is best to "Add a new post" with your issue in the Xbox Forums rather than replying your issue to a thread made by someone else. This will allow your issue to receive more attention and speed
up the process of resolving it.

Yes, the channel would only affect the wireless connection. Sorry, I think I may have missed the part where you mentioned you were connected via a wire. Heldbowl3 has some pretty good suggestions. If you haven't already done so, it may be worth investing
the time to factory reset your console if the same issue occurs when directly connected to the modem.
