Please explain the headphone situation for me

I've read quite a lot on the headphone support for the X1 and am left a little confused.

I am in the market for some new headphones, but don't really want to buy ones that are solely for the X1 (I want to use them on PC and tablets). If I understand it correctly with the new adapter you can use any headphones (with mic) and get virtual surround
support, and you don't need dedicated headphones designed for the X1,

I'd appreciate it if this can be confirmed for me please.

If you could suggest some top quality headphones, with mic I'd be interested in your thoughts also. I'm erring towards a Sennheiser set, but am willing to look elsewhere up to around the £200 bracket for a
really good set.

headphones don't work

Can you please clarify your situation? What model xbox are you using? You indicate that you’ve plugged the wired headphones into the “console,” did you mean that you plugged the headphones into the controller(s)?

Providing that the headphones are plugged into the (properly paired and functioning) controllers, and volume adjustments have been performed, they (and any other headphone) should work.

This is correct. Using the Xbox One Stereo Adapter (support.xbox.com/.../stereo-headset-adapter), you can use any of the following types of headsets:

◦A single 3.5-mm audio cable headset.

◦A dual 3.5-mm audio cable headset with 3.5-mm CTIA audio cables.

◦A headset with chat audio provided by a 3.5-mm audio cable and game audio provided by a separate cable with RCA or optical connectors. (Only chat audio will be enabled through the Stereo Headset Adapter. For RCA/optical connectors [game audio], follow the
manufacturer’s instructions to connect to the console.)

◦An Xbox 360 Wired Headset with a 2.5-mm audio cable. Connect to the Stereo Headset Adapter by using the 2.5-mm-to-3.5mm adapter that’s included with the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter.

As far as suggestions, that is a little harder for me to do. I am a huge gamer on console and PC and I strongly recommend Steelseries headsets, however, if you are an audiophile or use them for more multimedia related things, someone may be able to suggest
a better headset/headphones.
