PlayTo is choppy when playing mp4 videos, but not avi files. Can anyone help?

The video on my xbox slim is choppy when playing mp4 video files via playto to it. Avi files however play just fine. The problem started about a month ago. I also don't have any issue when playing mp4 video files to my second xbox or my wireless Panasonic
streaming player via playTo. I contacted support and had a lengthy chat but was still unable to resolve the issue. I left a copy of the chat incase that helps. Can anyone one help?

  3. XB1 plays AVI and MP4 files....

I'm not saying that I can't play mkv files like its a problem. I'm just saying that if the XB1 can play avi and MP4 files...why not have an app that does it so I don't have to go through hoops to play home videos?
