Playing Xbox 360 games on Xbox One with backward compatibility

Is it necessary to have owned/own an Xbox 360 for the backward compatibility to work on Xbox One ?

Currently, digitally, none of the Xbox 360 games Gold titles appear as gold free games and when I try to download them from the Xbox website it asks me for a purchase option when I already had set a purchase option. Does backward compatibility work with
Xbox 360 disc-base games instead of downloading them ?

Games with Gold Titles Included in Backward Compatibility

When backward compatibility launches in November, all future Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles will be playable on Xbox One. That means Xbox Live Gold members now will get more free games to play each month on Xbox One.

Backwards compatibility works with disc based and digital based games, but only the ones that are currently on the list of games (google it)

As far as I know you don't have to have owned a 360, I did notice that there is now a new option on the Xbox One that links to the Xbox.com website, where you can set 360 gold games to download, perhaps try it there?

If you are trying to play the game on a Xbox 360 or a Xbox One, sorry to say but the game is not backward compatible for either console. You can check the full list of games that are here.

As an owner of an xbox one s I do play xbox 360 games with backwards compatibility. The simplest way to explain how it does this is this: the xbox one essentially opens up the xbox 360 software to be able to play the games that are backwards compatible.
