Playing On Line against Friends

My grandson and I have Xbox One consoles, We would like to play on-line against each other. I added him as a friend on my xbox one console under the People section and he did the same and added me. When I go into Madden and click play a friend, it says
my friends list is empty? Do I need to set up a friends list in the game itself or what am I doing wrong?

He may not be showing up in Madden for a few reasons, He could be appearing offline, or not in that game.

I don't know if Madden has any specific method for inviting friends to play but another way to invite your grandson to play is to start the game then press the Xbox button on your controller and then press LB once to go to the People tab, select Friends,
then select your grandson from the list, select Invite > Invite to a game.

you can also invite him to a party from there so you can chat (if you have headsets/mics).

if you have a lot of friends you can Change Friendship and make him a Favourite so he always shows near the top of the list.

If you dont play games much then a used one would be the way . Mind if you want to play on line against friends other players you will need xbox live . To use those services 👍
