Playing multiplayer on minecraft windows 10

Looked through some of the help articles - man the information is confusing.

Anyways from what I'm inferring from the posts is that you can play Windows 10 to Windows 10, and Pocket Edition to Windows 10 and that's it right now.

Okay, this happened to me when I play with my friends. Usually when I host and they can't join me I quit the world and then i restart it again and they enter with no problems. I even play with third parts add-ons but this happens even if i don't use them.
Or maybe your friend is in the beta program and then you need to do the Xbox insiders hub beta to join

Your version IS different from hers. Her version is Java. Yours is Bedrock/Windows 10. Don't worry, this isn't compatible for multiplayer, it still the same. Try asking her to buy the Minecraft for Windows 10.

Minecraft for Windows 10 is only for the PC. If you purchased and played on the Xbox, then you own the Xbox version of Minecraft. You would need to purchase Minecraft for Windows 10 in order to play it on the PC.
