1. Playing for fun or to win? Which are you?

I was just having an interesting discussion over on the official Killer Instinct forums regarding this thread's topic and found it so delightful that I decided to bring it here to share with you guys.

Simply think about the questions in the subject line, answer them, and then explain why you made that choice and why you prefer it.

In any case, here's my take on this topic from the other forum:
I have always believed that playing for fun is more important than playing to win, but I've also always believed that winning helps. After all, I don't know ANYONE who enjoys losing on a consistent basis. The real trick is playing
to have fun, but learning the game in such a way so that you improve so that you also maximize your enjoyment.

If you win, win gracefully by saying things like GG, offering advice on how to improve their game (so they can better themselves to in turn improve your game), or consoling them by letting them know that they probably tried their best. It shows that you have
good sportsmanship and they will likely look up to you rather than look at you with dread or malice and as a result they will probably continue playing with you.

If you lose, lose gracefully, by taking control of your emotions and turning it into a learning experience - ask yourself, "what could I have done differently or better?" Or, if you honestly think you tried your best, you can ask yourself, "what did my opponent
do that was better or that worked against me?" and then learn from that. That way you can improve your game to do better next time, win more often, and have more fun. Assuming your opponent won gracefully, there's no harm in asking them for advice either -
I've met a ton of people who were willing to share. All I had to do was ask them, "how did you do that?"

You can't always win of course, so when you don't it's important to take a step back from the game if necessary rather than to get angry or sad, or otherwise let your emotions take over. Getting angry, sad, or upset and quitting won't teach you anything. Neither
will doing the same tactic (like spamming fireballs) over and over again - that just makes you more predictable (and I also believe that basically is the definition of insanity). It sets up a domino effect where you lose, get angry, quit, and rinse and repeat.
No learning takes place. You never get better and you never have fun. Why would anyone willingly and knowingly put themselves through that? I certainly wouldn't...
:)

Playing For Fun AND playing To Win!

We are not a clan, we are a community website that hosts Battlefield 3, Minecraft and even Fifa playdates. We have a different playdate on different games every week and we have had playdates on everything from Left dead 1 & 2 to Rainbow Six Vegas 2 to Call
of Duty and you name it, we have probably organised a playdate for it.

Our playdates change every week but this Sunday at 3PM UK Time (GMT+0) we are having a Battlefield 3 playdate, if you would like to join add my Gamertag: or for further information check out the website in my signature and click on the 'Play Dates'
logo on the box to the right of the page.

Thank you.

4. Playing for fun or to win? Which are you?

Don't care one bit if I win I play for the fun in not a very good gamer at all if all I thought about was winning then the fun goes from the game

I've been playing forza with friends on here for the last few months think I have yet to win a race but I have never had more fun with the game

I play for fun. I don't care if I lose. The only time I cared if I lost was in the arcade playing fighting games back in the day, but I only cared because we used to play for money and cigs etc.

8. Playing for fun or to win? Which are you?

I always play for fun when playing by myself but when i get with a group of friends that are competitive freaks then it gets personal mhuhaha. Playing with friends on GTA V on the 360 riding Akuma's and Supercars was interesting times..i believe it got so
bad i even had to delete a fellow because he got that enraged.

I try to enjoy the game but I find that losing is not fun. I have been the best on my team with positive K/D and losing and being frustrated while winning and being part of the team having fun. Needless to say I would rather negative performance for a win
then positive results for a lose.

10. It's a bit of an odd question because I think everyone plays for fun in some capacity and maybe their fun is winning. I play for the enjoyment and also the entertainment factor, games are like the best movies ever!

I think it was black ops 2 multiplayer that was the most enjoyable to me though, because you could be on the loosing team and still be in the top 3 scoring of the match. So I'd go on at 10 match loosing streak, no worries.

11. Honestly i'm not a great gamer, some would say i'm not even good, but that doesn't matter one bit to me.

I've only been gaming for a little over a year, and it's 100% for fun to me.

If I get stuck, or am having a hard time to the point where it starts frustrating me, I just take a break and walk away from the console until I calm down.

To me, there's no point in gaming if you're not doing it for fun.

I'm also afraid to play CoD multiplayer because I never have and I think people take it too seriously, you'd swear they were really on the front line of a war.

13. Playing for fun or to win? Which are you?

I can attest to Night's CoD description. Although I can get somewhat competitive in that series (I like to use real-life soldier tactics for teamwork purposes), I find that most of the time, I still remember that it's a game and can hold back. Some of the
friends I've had in the past, however, have had the "I'm only happy if I win" mentality, which IMO is not healthy. One in particular was never happy, even when we won. He didn't just want to win - he wanted to crush the opposition and would cry havoc whenever
he didn't. Needless to say, we're no longer friends, because I got too tired hearing about all of the negativity that spewed from his mouth despite us winning.

I play for fun, when it stops being fun, I stop playing it. I got so miffed on COD a few years back that I smashed my controller and my phone. Never played em since. As of etiquette, I say " Pah !! ". If you win you mock, if you lose you gripe. Playing for fun or to win? Which are you? :)

I play for fun. I have a full Xbox 360 friends list and out of all my friends, I have the most kills in COD Black Ops 2 Zombies. Sometimes I'm a little competitive but I generally play for fun. I usually end up getting the most kills between rounds 1-4 in
COD Black Ops 2 Zombies. But then again, this isn't the Olympics. Living in a city I encounter the trend to win and succeed and excellence in learning and work. But when it comes to my free time, I just want to have fun and a good/chilled/relaxed time, and
Xbox has helped with that. Some of my friends who live in small NZ towns dream of living in one of the cities in NZ. I live in a big city and sometimes, I just don't really like being crowded and pushed around by a lot of people. I would think many people
who live in my city go retreat to some rural area of somewhere else. Why? 'to get away from it all'.
