Play online, no Xbox Live subscription?

I preorded XB1 from Microsoft, been playing online with different games ever since... but have not purchased XBL Gold? I remember scanning a 1 month free QR code but my account has no active subscriptions.. anyone else experience this? Hope this doesn't
raise any flags but I'm really curious how this is working.

Why are we still paying for online if there are advertisements?

Xbox Live: A fee for online play and advertisements.

Does Microsoft still give out free one month subscriptions to new console purchases? I don't know how they do it on the Xbox One though. With the 360, you get 1 month free for up to 3 separate accounts on one xbox 360. Is it the same on the Xbox one?

Anyways, we did also have gold weekend for free.

A subscription to Xbox Live Gold is required to play games online, so you will require an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play Fortnite.

Xbox Lives basically the online portion of Xbox.

A gold subscription (live membership/subscription) is required to do certain things on Live (like play online multiplayer). Xbox live account usually means an account with gold.

Without it you can play offline game modes but some games are online only, as Fortnite is.

You will need to buy a subscription to Xbox Live Gold to play online on Fortnite.
