    Hi, I just received my Xbox One S and it came with 2 games. Neither will play without first updating. I live in a rural area with only cellular internet. I can not afford to download a 50 gb update! This is ridiculous that Microsoft would include a game
    on DVD that is useless! I don't need to play online with others. I just want to play the games!! They obviously worked or the game companies would not have released them in the first place.

    How can I play the games without them insisting on updating? Neither will play "offline" either.

    Oh how gaming isn't what is used to be.

    The only thing I miss is when buying a new game and being able to just insert the disc and play it straight away without any installing, updating and downloading any bonus DLC.

    Can you try updating the console without any storage devices attached? Just leave it hooked to the net and try updating that way.

    Most games will receive updates for bug fixes and additional content. Some will let you still play without updating but it usually won’t allow any online features until you update the game.

    You should be able to carry on gaming without any problem as updates load in the background unless they are updates for a game you are wanting to play, in which case you have to do the update first to allow the game to start.

    I tested another game that i also play by Game Pass. Tunic. This one popped up with a message that it needed an update and i let it do that.
    then i could play the game without problems
