Play and Charge Kit

I am wondering if there's something wrong with the Play & Charge Kit I bought today, or perhaps my controller or if this is yet another step backwards in the opposite march that Xbox One has been taking.

With my P&C Kit for 360, I used to just plug my controller into my laptop to charge it while simultaneously playing Xbox, without ever having a need to unplug it really. NOT TO USE IT AS A PC CONTROLLER. I charged it on my laptop
the same way you can plug in a phone or tablet to charge it. I did this because my TV is fairly far away and my laptop could sit right on my bed with me so it was extremely convenient. However, with the P&C Kit I bought today for my XOne, it won't charge in
my laptop, nor in a wall outlet. I know the cable works because it will actually charge my phone. When I plug it into my laptop or the wall, there's no LED indicator as stated on the instructions (red or white) nor does the battery icon on the console/screen
say that it's charging. It does indicate the remaining battery power but not that it's plugged in.

I can not use the USB port on my console due to the fact that it's currently vertical for lack of space (which works fine) but if I flip it (so that the USB port faces upwards) it won't read discs, go figure. But I did manage
to plug it into the console while I held the Xbox up, just to see if the cable worked and it showed that it was charging the controller. So I assume the kit works based on all of this but is it absolutely necessary to have it plugged into the console to work
or is this a problem with my controller? I have a Day One controller and I am not sure if this is a common issue or not. Any information will help. Controller and console are up to date.

play and charge kit

i just took the rechargable battery pack out of my controller and fidled with the release button on top of the battery pack and it fits in nice now and doesnt come loose. but the release button doesnt stick out at all like the original battery pack. it sits
flush with the controller.. is this the same for you mate??

 

The Xbox one is not designed to stand vertically it should be flat It is a play and charge so you can play while it charges so it needs to be plugged into your console.

 

I believe it works, just with no status indicator. I noticed that the light doesn't come on as well except when plugged into my XBO and controller.
