Permanently Deleting A Gamertag

I was hoping someone could help me find a way to permanently delete an old Gamertag associated with my primary email address. The Gamertag was originally for my stepson, who passed away early last year. At the time of its creation, he was too young to really
need or want an email address of his own so I just used my primary address for him, with my secondary email address used for my own gamertag at the time. Now that he has passed, the emails I receive from MS and the occasional incorrect sign-ins by myself or
other members of the family bring his image to us in the form of his Avatar. Which, apart from the vampire fangs, bears a striking similarity to my departed step-son. I'm sure you can imagine how jarring this can be.

We want to be able to let our son go, but this problem has been making it a difficult process. It came up again yesterday when I brought home an Xbox One and mistakenly used the primary address to sign in and my step-son's pseudo-vampiric image popped up
on the screen.

All I want to do is delete this gamertag permanently. I have heard this is impossible but I can't imagine why that would be. Changing or ignoring my email address is not an option. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IF you permanently deleted the Microsoft Account, it _still_ would not free up the gamertag as gamertags are not returned to the pool of available gamertags automatically. So, deleting your account would not do what you want...

 

Deleting a GamerTag

The account you are using to post here is "ZmB T RaMP". If you want that name for another account, you'll need to change the name of this account.

There is no way to delete the account.

 

I'm so sorry for your lose. Do you have access to his account? You can easily change the primary and secondary emails for any account, to do so please follow these instructions:

I'm very sorry that has happened.I know what loss is like, but I have never lost a loved one that close.

Unfortunately , Microsoft accounts cannot be simply "Deleted". Gold Membership can be revoked , but accounts cannot be deleted. Even banned accounts remain existent. You could make a random email, with a password you won't remember , and simply change
it to that and delete the account off of the console. Once again , I am very sorry.

the closest thing to deleting an account is moving it to another Microsoft Account and then close that Microsoft Account.

An option is to create a new Microsoft Account, move the xbox live account to that new Microsoft Account and close that Microsoft Account afterwards. This should make the xbox live account inaccessible

Please contact Xbox Customer Support to request data removal request.

After the Advocacy team has verified that you do own the account through email/phone call they will permanently delete your gamertag. This will also flag your Microsoft Account from creating a new Gamertag. Then you can provide to www.account.live.com to
close out the account.
