Periodical DNS issue, 360 sending blank queries

    Background Info:

First off, to preface things I live in south Florida and have Comcast for internet. I live with a roommate, between us we have three Xbox 360s but generally only two are running simultaneously. It is worth noting that we are both network engineers by trade,
so we have access to troubleshooting tools that most users do not.

    The Symptoms:

Occasionally, one of our 360s can't connect to Xbox Live. It's almost always a DNS error. Most of the time the other Xbox 360s can connect fine while one stubbornly refuses to. One is set up through wireless, the other two are wired to the network. All
seem to be vulnerable to the same issue.

We've tried setting up everything with a static IP, manually inserting DNS servers (generally 8.8.8.8), reset to factory defaults, power-cycled the hell out of everything... yet still, when one of the 360s is having DNS errors... nothing seems to help. It
just randomly starts working again when it feels like it.

    The Current Situation:

So, tonight it started happening again to the 360 in my room. As per usual, we set it up with a static IP, set manual DNS, power-cycled... all to no avail. It's been at least 90 minutes since we've been messing with it. It connects to the home network
with no issues, I can even connect to our home media server in Windows Media Center just fine. It just refuses to connect to the internet.

As we were wondering what the hell it was doing, my roommate logged into the network monitoring on the Juniper firewall that the network runs through before hitting the modem and watched the 360 make requests.

    IT'S SENDING 0-BYTE DNS QUERIES!

As you may imagine, we were both a bit puzzled by this. We haven't tapped the network to get a PCap yet, but will probably do so tomorrow so I can post it in the thread as well. (And just out of sheer curiosity if nothing else)

Is this an issue that you guys are familiar with, and is there any workaround or fix for it?

    :)

  3. HBO GO not working on Xbox 360

It's a DNS issue. I fixed it by manually the DNS servers on the Xbox 360. I used Level3's public DNS servers:

    209.244.0.3

    209.244.0.3

How many devices on your network are actively performing NAT?

May I ask, do you receive a DNS error message through your console, or do you exclusively use the monitoring tool on the juniper firewall, to determine this behavior?

When you say "It's sending 0-byte DNS queries!", are you able to see any activity on port 3074 from the same endpoint, at the same time?

Do you know if your juniper firewall/NAT support UPnP and more specifically IGD?

    DNS issue on 360?

    Hey Nep

Thank you for taking the time to post this on the Xbox Forums. We understand that you are experiencing difficulties with being able to connect your console to your home network.

Just for testing purposes, are you able to connect your console to an alternate network, such as a mobile hotspot? You mentioned that you are able to connect to the network at your lake house, but there could also be interference that might be causing discrepancies
    .

If you are able to perform this, it might indicate that it could have something to do with the network configuration your are running. There is a chance an update was passed out to your network hardware and could have mildly changed something there.

Additionally, if possible, it would also be worth a try to try using an wired connection using an ethernet cable.

If you can test this out in your home, and provide us with the results, we might be able to provide additional troubleshooting techniques that should help alleviate this.
