    Im trying to install game pass games onto my external drive but it only allows me to use my ssd drive which i want to keep as much space in as possible, the app says the D: drive (my external drive) is not formatted as an NTFS but i go into the properties of the drive and it says that it is formatted as NTFS. I even tried reformatting it and restared my pc but the xbox app still doesnt allow it to be used. At this point i think its on microsoft themselves for this the drive should work perfectly fine ive tried so many things

    External hard drive recognising but not formatting

    Hi, presume this is for an xbox one (rather than a 360), the external drive would need to be formatted to NTFS rather than FAT.

    Try reformatting it to NTFS on the PC, that may help with it getting recognised

    the xbox formats to ex-fat, it can read and write to ntfs, fat32 and ex-fat. plenty of free apps available on mac to format external drives to ntfs though.

    If you want to use it for games and apps, it has to be formatted for use by the Xbox.

    If you want to use the drive to store music or video files, including game capture, you must format it NTFS.

    All of the MS docs say this only, so I would advise against exFAT.

    I am using two external drives on mine, one for games (formatted by the Xbox), one for game capture (formatted on my PC for NTFS).

    Hi Titan,

    Thank you for the updates regarding this situation!

    I would say, trying connecting the external hard drive to a Laptop/PC. If it appears then

    format the drive    . If it doesn't appear then there is an issue with the drive.

    Once the drive is formatted, plug it back into the console (it may format again to the correct format - NTFS). Then transfer one of the games onto the external drive and see if it works.

    When you plug a USB flash drive or an external HDD into the Xbox, this storage must be formatted on the Xbox. And the file system must not be FAT32 but NTFS.
    So first, on the PC, format this USB to the NTFS file system and then connect it to the console.
