Paypal was charged, rather than using Account Money

I recently bought a $30 card to buy a game off xbox live. Because of taxes, I was unable to buy it. I then tried using paypal, assuming that the account money would be used first, and any remaining cost would be charged. Instead, the paypal account was charged
the WHOLE price. so now I have $30 on the account I have no use for. what in the world Microsoft?

I didn't even think about PayPal! That's a really good idea. I had an unauthorized charge recently to my PayPal account and they were AWESOME about reversing it -- and quickly, too.

 

Paypal not working?

My gold membership was due for renewal on 21/01/13. Today I received an email saying they could not charge my paypal account. The account stored with Microsoft is correct but it appears no attempt has been made to take the payment from paypal account.
Is there an issue with Microsoft using paypa? I would rather keep payments set to paypal than store a debit card number against my profile so would rather get this sorted.

 

Did you use the website or the console? If the website you cannot use ms account money via the website

if on the console you had to switch payment options to ms account

 

I used the console. The payment option was on the prepaid money, but it would say I didn't have enough for taxes, so I switched it to paypal.

 

that would be why

when selecting ms account balance and you don't have enough it will ask you if you want to charge the rest to the payement option on file

you must proceed with the purchase and the remainder of the cost will be charged with the payment options on file

as long as you have a payment option on file

if you cancel you will be charged the full amount on the payment option

hence why you should be reading the screen

 

except that option never popped up. after trying to purchase the game I would get "not enough to cover taxes" error, after that it would send me back to the purchase screen.

That being said, From talking with xbox support on twitter, seems the game in question (Halo 4) doesn't allow split payments. Wish I had known that earlier.
