You pay your ISP for their services - for Xbox, the cost of Live covers the multiplayer servers and services. Allowing only a certain group an 'out' from paying for the services that everyone else pays for is what they've deemed to be unfair.

While Fortnite is a free to play game, Xbox Live Gold is required to play any multiplayer game and a paid subscription is how Microsoft keeps their servers all over the world maintained, as keeping those servers up and running 24/7, 365 days a year all around
the world costs a lot of money. It wouldn't be fair to make an exception for just one game when paid games also need to pay for a subscription to play online.

There are many ways to earn the Xbox live gold subscription. First you can look for deals to get the subscription initially. Then there is

Microsoft rewards/Bing rewards. This allows you to accumulate points from searches that everyone nowadays does and get points from purchases of games, DLC etc. With them points you can then turn around and purchase Xbox live gold subscription. As others
have stated the fee is to keep servers up and running. With a live subscription you also get other benefits.

Example: if you just earn the search points a month its 15,000 points you can earn that's 500 a day for just searching different things on Bing. That equals 15 dollars in currency that is more than the price for a one month subscription.

Utilizing the Microsoft Rewards search, you can earn 150 points using your PC, 20 additional points if you use the Edge browser, and 100 points if you search with the Bing mobile App. If you complete the 3 extra daily activities, you can receive between
30 and 70 extra points. So realistically you are looking at closer to 300 points a day, with some outliers. Really 9000 points a month, but that's still okay. Additionally, it is cheaper to redeem these points than actually purchase an Xbox Live gold subscription.
You could redeem a 1 month subscription for 6800 points. On top of that, Microsoft will regularly have discounts on these subscriptions, and you could redeem for even cheaper.

TLDR: Microsoft Rewards is free. If you have a phone, you could earn at least 100 points a day absolutely free.

 

I'm sorry, but every multiplayer game on Xbox needs a subscription.
