Past Due Balance

You can't. You would have to either add money to the credit card/PayPal you already have on file or add a new one to pay off the balance before you can add a prepaid gold card.

Would you please tell me if you tried to pay it direct on the Microsoft services & subscriptions page? If you did not, just find your past due subscription and select Pay Now. It should work.

Keep in mind you can only pay it using credit card or PayPal. It cannot be paid using your Microsoft account balance. If it still does not work, please try it using an Inprivate / Incognito tab on another web browser.

Now why do you have a past due balance if you cancelled your next billing on time is a question that I will not be able to answer. Maybe your credit card could not be charged on your last billing date before you cancelled. Unfortunately I can only guess as I do not work for Microsoft/Xbox and I do not have access to user accounts, purchases or charges.

Past due balances have to be cleared before further purchases are allowed, here's the support page for past due balances which will help explain it a bit.

unfortunately past due balances can only be paid using a debit/credit card or mobile operator billing

you can't use your account balance or prepaid cards or codes to clear a past due balance.
