    Parental Consent for an Adult

For many months, I've had issues with modifying the settings on my Xbox account. Even though I'm 19 years old and my account's birthdate is correct, my account is still considered to be a child account. Due to this, I require parental consent each time I
try to change my account settings, and on rare occasions, I run into problems purchasing games or add-ons.

So here's what I'm trying to find out: how would I go about updating my account to "adult" status?

    :)

I apologize for that but I'm glad you did find the solution and everything is working the way you want it.

Why you're being asked for parental consent

If the date of birth on your Microsoft account shows that you're under a certain age, Xbox is required to request parental consent for you to use Xbox Live.

If you're an adult, but you got a message asking for parental consent, it's because you're a child in your Microsoft family.

    Solution

If you're of an age that requires parental consent, follow the steps on your Xbox to have your parent sign in and add you to their Microsoft family.

If you're over the age requiring parental consent, have your parent remove you from the family. They'll have to sign in to
account.microsoft.com/family, select your profile, and select
    Remove.

If you're unable to clear the message, contact Xbox Support.

Keep in mind too that the system uses the age you used when you set up the account. While you can change your age anytime after the fact. It won't be recognized as your new age. This is to prevent kids from changing their ages to bypass things.

I couldn't find the child promotion option, so I did some research. After doing some searching on Google, I found out how to update my account. Apparently, there isn't actually a child promotion option on Xbox One. I ended up updating my account by getting
removed and re-added to my respective family as an adult.

The support article you linked seems to be 360-oriented; Xbox One isn't mentioned at all in it. But regardless, thank you for your reply. I wouldn't have gotten this far without it.

    Hi Blackout,

Prior to you turning 18, did a parent setup your account? If this is the case the following will need to be done.

Promote a child account to an adult account in Xbox

Xbox Live determines whether an account is a child account or an adult account based on the age of the account owner. Account owners who are younger than 18 are given child accounts in the United States. The legal adult age varies by country and region (for
example, the adult age in Korea is 20).

Child accounts are tied to an adult's Microsoft account. The adult account can control Family Settings and restrict some features of Xbox Live.

After you reach the age of adulthood (which varies by country and region), you can promote a child account to an adult account. This promotion removes the Family Settings and Xbox Live restrictions.

To promote a child account to an adult account

    • Sign in to Xbox Live by using the account that you want to change.
    • Go to Settings and then select Account.
    • Select Promote Child Account.
Note This option is available only if the date of birth for the account indicates that you have reached the age of adulthood (18 in the United Kingdom). The legal adult age varies by country and region. The age of an account owner is calculated
by using the date of birth provided when the account was created. This date cannot be changed. If you entered an incorrect date of birth when you created the account, your only option is to create a new account using the correct date of birth.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to promote the account.
