Parent needs help-Purchased PvZ Garden Warfare have to purchase Gold Membership?

I am an advanced computer knowledge parent that is VERY frustrated with Xbox 360. Guess I am forced to learn now as my 8 year son just purchased Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare. Despite what the sales person told me, apparently we do need to have a gold
membership to play this game. That is frustration #1. I had a 2 day free pass, so enabled. BUT! Game wants to update and needs 1.3g of space. When we tried to play the game, it asks if you want to update. You can't say "no" so why ask???? It will not do anything
without the update. I deleted stuff, but it wasn't working so I finally just purchased an annual GOLD Membership which really makes me mad. Now, it is downloading. I tried to find out how much Cloud storage I would have before I purchased the Gold. I also
tried to find out if a regular USB would work to use as additional storage. No help on the "please buy me" Xbox Gold Membership site. After spending over an hour trying to get this game to work, I really don't want to go internet hunting. We know how long
that takes. So, please explain if I did something wrong & how this works. I am beyond mad that I spend money on a game that I can't play. And no good instructions on what needs to occur. And APPARENTLY you have to turn off and turn back on the console for
each step to work. Purchase 2-day access. Turn off, turn on. Still doesn't work. Purchase Gold (another $60 on top of game price). Doesn't work. Turn off, turn on. Download starts to appear. Game still says that it needs an update. Turn off, turn on. Now,
2 hours later, he is playing and I am gong to get something to eat.

Did I do this stuff correctly???

Did I have to buy the Gold Membership to play this game??

I bought the Xbox 360 with Kinect which came with the 4g version. I was told that this would be enough as I only needed more storage if I wanted to store my complete games on the console. I thought that having the disc meant I didn't need game storage? Do
I need to purchase another storage device? How much cloud storage do I get? Why did I have to download over 1 GIG!!!!!! after purchasing this game???

Sorry, but Plants vs. Zombies is an online only game so you will need a live gold account to play.

 

That game in particular is a strictly online, multiplayer game, so it requires a gold subscription in order to play. Most games only require gold to play online, but can be played offline without a gold subscription.

Storage space on the console can actually fill up pretty quickly. You will need extra storage space if your son does download any extra content for games. You can use flash drives for the extra space. You can have up to 2 plugged in at a time and 32gb of
space for each (so an extra 64gb). It's actually also a good idea to have an actual hard drive so you can install the discs to them. The discs are still required to play the games, but it causes less wear and tear on the disc/drive and can help the games load
faster.

For the 360 you're given 512mb of cloud storage. The cloud is only available for game saves.

 

I had the same probem as FadedColt - I purchases Gold, now when we go into xbox game Plants V Zombies offers the update (no choice but to say yes), then when we go through the motions and do the update it tells me I've already got enough of this type of
thing on the xbox, and wont let us update...... 2 HOURS later and my 8 year old is in tears I am so frustrated. HELP

 

For future reference you should create a new thread for better assistance.

Currently your gamertag is showing as Silver. If you added the membership from the website then it can take a while for it to populate your account. To speed it up go to Settings>System>Network and run a connection test on the console
