Overscan issue on Xbox Series X

I opened the pictures settings on my Xbox and got to the screen with blue and green arrows, but the green arrowhead was cut off. It it advised going into the picture settings on my TV, as there is no way to manually zoom out the picture coming from the Xbox a bit.

I have adjusted the aspect ratio, the zoom level, the resolution, and scoured every single menu and submenu via my TV's display and picture menus but nothing I do seems to zoom it out enough to a point I can see the edges of any given image my Xbox is displaying. No other devices I use (Switch, PS5, and occasionally a Chromebook) have this issue on this TV, which is admittedly an older device from the early 2010s. The issue is severe enough that it's cutting off some pretty important HUD elements in a number of games, like ammo meters and health bars, making them significantly less playable.

    :)

Overscan issue on Xbox Series X

    Hello Leeggyy,

Thank you for your prompt response.

We would like to ask additional questions to help us further isolate the isssue.

    1. Are you using the HDMI cable that came with their Xbox Console to connect to your TV?
    2. Have you tried connecting to a different HDMI port of your TV?
    3. Was it working before, and this issue randomly occurred?
    4. In the TV & Display options menu, have you checked Video fidelity & over scan making sure it shows that it is auto-detecting the HDMI?
    5. Have you tried connecting the Xbox to another TV or monitor to check if the issue is still same?

For the meantime, here are the things that we can try as well.

    1. Check and make sure Accessibility options and Magnifier is not turned on.

    2. Check for TV updates. Refer to your TV manufacturer.

    3. Reset the console and keep apps and settings to see if this could be a software issue.

    • Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    • Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info > Reset console.
    • On the Reset your console, select: Reset and keep my games & apps. Use this option as your first choice when troubleshooting. It will reset the OS and delete all potentially corrupted data without deleting your games and apps.

We look forward to your response. Kindly let us know, if there is any misunderstanding or clarifications of our description by sending us a reply.

    Thanks for the reply!

The magnifier unfortunately didn't solve the problem after trying it. If the Magnify function could be used to make the image smaller than it originally was, this would have been a delightfully easy workaround, but it can only be used to enlarge images, or return to the default size, but not to shrink.

To try and answer question 1, the issue is that when I am using my Xbox console, the image has the outer edges cut off, seemingly due to it not communicating properly with the TV itself.

On the Xbox, the image I am using to try and calibrate this is found can be found via Settings-->Genetal-->TV & display options-->Setup, Calibrate TV. After that, click forward a few times until "Aspect ratio & sharpness." There should be two rectangles, a large green one and a smaller blue one, inside the green one. The green one's edges are supposed to touch the borders of the TV screen. The blue one is fully visible, but its borders are nearly touching the edges of the TV's screen.

Unfortunately, when viewing similar calibration screens with my other devices, the referenced images aren't cut off. I've been trying to adjust the aspect ratio of the TV itself to see if that would fix it, as the calibration screen advises, but without a way to shrink the image the Xbox is sending to my TV, I can't seem to fix it.

To clarify the answer to question 2, it seems to be happening to all images coming from my Xbox specifically .

    Hello Leeggyy,

Thank you for sharing your concern here in Xbox Community Forum and we hope that all is well.

Based on the description, you are having issue with the picture display with your Xbox console. Let us see how we can help.

We would like to ask few questions so that we can provide a more accurate information on how to resolve your concern.

    1. Are you referring to the picture output that display in your TV?
    2. Is this happening to specific picture or happening to all?
It appears the issue is related to the display of your TV because the same will happen if you are connecting it to other devices. How about using a magnifier in your Xbox console so you can use the controller to interact with items on the screen? To know how to use magnifier in your Xbox console, see the steps below. Magnifier zooms in on the screen to help you see text and images better on your console. You can use Magnifier with your controller or with a connected USB keyboard.

To turn magnifier on or off on your Xbox Console:

If you’re using a controller, press and hold the Xbox button until it vibrates, press the View button, and then select Yes.

    • To turn it off, hold the Xbox button until it vibrates and press the View button again.
    • Alternatively, you can press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then go to Profile & system > Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier and check the box next to Magnifier on.
      • To turn it off, uncheck the box.
    Use Magnifier with your controller:
