Out with the old!

what people are missing is that while the franchises themselves are old, the devs are new to them. halo 5 will be the second halo game by 343 and gears will be the 1st gears game from black tusk

 

@DuFFuL : Don't expect something really "big and new" until next E3....

 

Yea I'm not a huge gears fan. Its hard for me to get into third person shooter unless its open world or sand box style. Just from my experience on the tf alpha I believe its a game changer and will set the precedent for future games. Just my opinion.

 

Here's the answer folks. It's called dead (or nearly dead) IP's.

That's just off the top of my head. I think developers should really pick up some of these titles again and re-introduce them. Alex Kidd next generation with a bit of a spin on it 'could' be like a little like Zelda if they worked that angle. Shenmue...
I won't even go there. That left a whole in my chest when it was cancelled.

Re-producing the same thing over and over does get a little boring and its no different to watching a TV series that's into season 13, some work, others don't. This generation they really want to focus on more MMORPG's. There were some last gen but not
enough of a variety.

Gears I can't say I have played before but maybe if they rebooted the saga, I would give it a go.

Hey I would love to see certain things redone. In another thread some one mentioned the strike series. If you don't know, it was a helicopter game on the sega that was payed in top down view almost like a strategy game. It was a great franchise. But they
are rehashing the same franchises and while some still succeed, like gta5 (haven't played it personally) most of the time it's just a money spin because they know it will sell. Look at resident evil. It's nothing like it was originally. To me they wrecked
that game when they went to 3rd person view. I loved first and second one where it was all wired camera angles. If they went back to that I'd be happy. But the way it is. They need to let go of that franchise. But I can almost guarantee there will be another.

 

Innovation's place is being taking over by riskless greed...dont buy it, rent it and return it.

 

I can see your point. Truth is, I hated what they took away from GOW when they made Judgment. GOW: Judgment was the first of all the GOW games that I didn't preorder and never bought... I just rented it for the SP, which wasn't bad. That being said, if they
were to take a step back and make the new GOW and add back some of the aspects that made it the game it used to be, I'd be pretty excited to see what it has to offer on next gen. As of now though, until I hear more details, I'll just wait to see. Of course
this is JMPO on GOW.

Now COD... I got tired of that game after MW3 and that is what I feel starts to put a finger on the difference for me. Every year, they regurgitate the same basic game with slightly newer character models and maybe a graphics update. But, what can they really
be expected to accomplish in just a year?

Most other series, like GOW (or at least most games that I'm a fan of) have taken their time between games and have at least tried to add ideas that would affect core game play aspects. This, to me, is what helps keep my excitement level for the next game that's
coming out. Sure, it may be 'just another <insert name here>' but if it plays a bit differently and has some new concepts to it then I look forward to it.

I also agree on the fact that you're probably just getting old. >.< lol No I'm not saying that in an insulting way... I've probably got a few years on you myself.

 

I agree to a point. I find fe. CoD rehashed way too much, but I don't think Halo is "too much" yet. I have no experience with GoW so I can't really comment on that. The news only made me happy on the level of "I know many people want a new GoW game".

I think there's a good mix of old and new and I think it's needed. New IPs are always risky, while those bestseller franchises always have fans that will like the game and they will likely sell OK just based on their history. That said, I wouldn't want all
big games on X1 to be old franchises. Ryse, Titanfall, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive.. I think we have good, new, stuff coming, I don't think the old stuff needs to be just discarded, but yes, there's a line somewhere and I feel CoD is way past that lol
Assassin's Creed was looking pretty bad with the annual release, however Black Flag seems to be a huge success, so I guess that redeems a bit.

Also, renting games is not possible everywhere in the world. As far as I'm aware, there is no business that does that around where I live.

 

I like to look at it as expanding on our choices - they're giving us a bunch of new IPs (Titanfall; Project Spark) that look really, really cool while simultaneously giving us more of what they know we love because we buy into it with existing franchises
(Call of Duty, Gears of War, Minecraft, Forza Motorsport), & in some cases have even successfully brought back some thought long-dead franchises (Killer Instinct).

 

I think a new GoW would be awesome.

Same for Halo.

 

Hey like I said in my post. It's a personal thing. But I can certainly understand everyone opinions.

 

The opinion I have is that while I want to see many new IP's for the Xbox one I do not mind old ones as long as they actually make them good. Gears had its day they finished the main storyline and then I think no one was bothered with Judgement including
myself. For this to work I think they need to take a break from making them for an extended period like Fallout 3 (not including new Vegas) which was made 6 years ago and we can not wait for Fallout 4. Games that come out every year or 2 years are starting
to feel like a let down. GTA 4 and GTA 5 had a gap of five years look at how good that was and how much everyone anticipated it. Although I can understand Halo and Gears as they are going to be on a new generation so hopefully they will be excellent games.

 

I agree with PUDDIN DAGGER, at least to a certain extent. Although I think you're right that not releasing a franchise every single year is a good thing from a consumer point of view as it helps build hype and anticipation, it may not be from a developer
or publisher's point of view. Think of it like this - could a publisher make more money making a new game every year than if they made a higher quality one only every 3-5 years? I'm fairly certain nobody can really answer that question unless you're some sort
of market analyst like Michael Pachter or something. In any case, you'd still be guessing & I think it also depends largely on just how popular a particular franchise really is.

 

I think there are good examples of both GG. GTA being a good example of the "3-5 years" range and CoD and AC being good examples of annual releases. Until GTA5, it was CoD:BO2 holding the fastest selling records, so I guess it goes to show that both tactics
work and can be just about equally succesful. But I guess not all games can be made annually, such as GTA most likely or they would have to tone down the scale a lot but that probably wouldn't be good for business. The CoD crowd probably like their new maps
and slight alterations to game mechanics every year

 

I remember myself saying Gears Of War wouldn't die after 3 i was right. Microsoft will never give up on a cash cow like GOW or Halo. It's just not going to happen, it's a real shame as Microsoft are turning into the Macdonalds of gaming. The same old
recycled stuff again and again. Why Alan Wake is not even penciled in for the XBOne i will never know.
