But if you remove the HDD or replace it you get asked to download the system update again. Meaning at least part of the OS is stored on the HDD.

If it got deleted, can you try reinstalling it from the store? Seems very strange for it to just disappear like that.

This is not correct. Edge is part of the OS and can't be found in the store.

Usually a Restart of the console after a update should restore it.

If the console is enrolled in a Insider preview use the Report a problem feature.

For anyone in the future who is reading this, don't follow the terrible advice about reinstalling the OS. Here is how I fixed it:

1. Make sure you are logged into the OS as the child account.

2. Got to the app settings for the Microsoft Store: Terminate the app, repair and reset everything.

3. Restart the microsoft store app and login with the parent (purchaser) account.

4. Uninstall the program either in the windows store or through the start menu. It will only remove it from the child account.

5. Find the problematic program in the app store (Forza for me) and reinstall

Problem solved.

It was all about something being broken or wrong with the microsoft store app and permissions. Nothing required an OS reinstall.

every OS has thousands of files and internal applications, things change size and they don't list everything in an update as the page would be longer than a motorway. every image on your console is cached from the network and these change whenever a game is moved, added or removed from the store, gamepass areas. just opening the store will refresh all the images etc etc.
