    Original Xbox One Black Screen - Can't Perform Factory Reset


    I've tried swapping and testing cables and HDMI ports, those aren't the problem. Hard reset does nothing. Plugging power brick into wall outlet instead of power strip does nothing. Boot into low resolution mode doesn't work. I bought a brand new 128gb usb
    2.0 flashdrive, took about 5 hours for the thing to fully format into NTFS, downloaded and copied over the $SystemUpdate file to attempt to reset to factory settings, but that doesn't work either; after power cycling and unplugging the network cable, I put
    the usb stick in, plug the xbox back in, hold pair and eject, tap the power on, keep holding pair and eject until the two power-on chimes sound, I release pair and eject and the power-down chime sounds. The console doesn't actually power down. The only thing
    I can see after I try the reset, is that there is an "update" text file in $SystemUpdate folder on the usb stick that wasn't there originally, and it's two lines of sections of numbers and letters, like some kind of log entry.

    Anyone have any ideas? The tv recognizes that the Xbox is putting something out via HDMI, but it's just black screen and the tv auto defaults back to the home screen after a while. The HDD sounds like it's spinning, and the wireless elite controller is still
    paired with the console; it can turn it on, and - through muscle memory - you can power the console off via the controller button prompts.

    Hi there are quite a few things you can try.

    Firstly if your Xbox One boots and shows only a black screen then let it sit at the black screen for around an hour and it may then boot up correctly.

    Try powering the Xbox off by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds, disconnect the power supply from both the mains power outlet and the rear of the Xbox and let things sit for an hour before reconnecting everything and try again, if you get
    the black screen leave it there for an hour or so.

    Factory restore the Xbox using a USB flash drive, this will erase all your data on the Xbox hard drive though.

    Note If you can't perform the following procedure to restore the factory default settings because you have no picture on your screen or you can't access the Settings menu, you can also perform this action by using a file loaded to a USB flash drive. For
    access to the file and the instructions, see How to use the Offline System Update Diagnostic Tool on Xbox One.

    Follow the instructions on the link above exactly and you might have some luck.

    If your Xbox is using the preview update then attempting to use the OSUDT files to update the Xbox is a complete and utter waste of time as those files only contain the public release of the system software and as such will not work and can often cause more
    harm than good.
