Original Xbox games not playing on Xbox 360

I have an older Xbox 360 "fat" model. I purchased a refurbished Microsoft 120 gb HDD from Game Stop, which they assured me was official. I'm all up-to-date on software and signed into Xbox Live. None of my original Xbox games (all on disc) are working, they're
all giving the "The game couldn't start. Try downloading the game again." error message. These are games that are listed as compatible titles, like Halo 2 and Dead or Alive 3. I've scoured the forums, google, everything, and I'm stumped. Is there any other
explanation other than the HDD I got from Game Stop isn't as advertised? Is there some way for me to find out if I have an official Microsoft HDD or not? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That game is not backwards compatible so it won't work.

Not all games were made to work on the 360. If they aren't on this list, then they won't work -

Midnight Club 3 Dub edition is not working on my xobx 360. i updated it on live and a message popped up saying i couldn't play the game but there might be a way to download an update... it also gave me a code. Any suggestions?

If the games aren't playing, then it is an issue with the hard drive. That's really the only way to find out if a hard drive is official or not. If the hard drive is not purchased brand new, there's really no guarantee that it is official since there are
so many fakes out there.

Smwutches is correct. If the system will not play Halo 2, it is likely not an official hard drive.

You're going to need to bring it back to GameStop for an exchange.

You can only play original Xbox games on your Xbox 360 console if you have an official Xbox 360 Hard Drive.

To play original xbox games on the xbox 360 you need to have a harddrive to play them. I would belive you already have one but just had to post it in case.

The 360 has totally different hardware to the original Xbox, for the 360 to play original software it has to emulate it. The emulator needs additional software to tell it how to play these games, no updates, no play. Game demos for the original Xbox have
never worked on the Xbox 360.
