So i'm aware that since the original xbox has not been in production for roughly 14 years, I can't get help with this via Xbox Support. So I'm going to give it a go with the forums. Now, I have an original xbox with the official Microsoft component cables
connected into my Sony XBR55X930E Series. This console supports 480p, 720p and 1080i depending on the game in question and when you want to switch to progressive mode, you simply hold L + R and press the two thumb sticks in. When I do this, I'm getting a much
clearer picture, but unfortunately the screen is defaulting to 4x3 ratio. When I'm in 480i mode, the console defaults to 16x9. Regardless if I go to video settings and change to widescreen or standard, it remains unchanged in progressive mode. When I'm in
480i I can switch to anything and it works as such. I never used to have this problem so I'm confused if it's my cables or some glitch in the system. Has anyone come across this and knows a workaround? I highly doubt microsoft is going to assist me in an old,
    out-of-production console.

Honestly the one thing that could solve this problem would be complete backwards compatibility on the Xbox One or Xbox Series X. I love my OG xbox but if I'm going to run into these issues I'd rather just say goodbye to my old reliable.

    :)

No, just blurrier, since its in 480i. When I switch to 480p it looks much sharper but its like stuck in 4:3. When 480p is on, I switch to widescreen or standard and nothing changes. Its so odd because i’ve used it in the past and didn’t have issues. I
wonder if its the cables and progressive mode is having some sort of issue producing widescreen. I’ve had it work before so thats why i’m so confused. Taking games out of the equation, the dashboard at the very least should support both. I tried a game that
supported 16:9, 007 Nightfire and it was in letterbox with progressive mode on, widescreen with it off.

It's been a long, long time since I've used an original Xbox console, but I do remember that most games back then were 4:3 aspect ratio, if you play such games in 16:9 they just won't look right anyway. The only way they would look correct is if the game
    itself supported 16:9.

Other than the games themselves, the only other way to change the ratio would be to do what a lot of Retro gaming collectors do and buy a dedicated up-scaling device. These sit between the old console/computer and the TV/monitor and allow you override the
console graphics and change them in the upscale box. The caveat is they're not cheap.

Im fully aware that not all games supported 16:9. In fact, there are lists of games that show their resolution and ratio compatibility. My issue is progressive mode refuses to switch to widescreen even on the dashboard. When progressive mode is off it displays
16:9 perfectly fine. This in itself is the problem.

    Hi Corey,

So I've been messing around with my OG Xbox in recent days and I've found some interesting stuff that may relate to your issue. Specifically, when the Xbox is set to 480p and widescreen mode, it's not putting out a true 16:9 signal i.e. 854 x 480p, it's
actually running at 720 x 480p which I believe is an anamorphic aspect ratio. See here for further details: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/480p

As a result, I think it's more a case of how your Sony XBR is resolving and scaling the image, but as this is an analog signal, you should be able to select using your remote how the video is scaled. Normally there's a button labelled Wide or a rounded box
with arrows pointing out from the centre, depending on the age of your Sony remote.
