Well then to the OP there are a few websites that give you a detailed step by step. Do you like Llamas? Use to google search them on how to look after and maintain them Original (Old) Xbox questions? ;)

My main question was about getting higher resolution output to my TV.

I bought the component video cable, but that only gives me 480 resolution.

I see there's options in the Video Setup for higher res, up to 1080i, but how do you get that to the TV?

(And why would there be an option in Setup if there's no HDMI cable for it?)

I noticed Silvercube's comment about a component to HDMI converter, and I looked those up on eBay, but does it really give 1080 resolution, or is it just "upscaled" from 480?

Glad to see there's still people playing the "good old" Xbox still..!

    Original (Old) Xbox questions?

Just a couple of quick notes.

I'm getting clarification but from from a policy standpoint and for many reasons we don't allow the discussion of self repairs.

The main reason is it depends highly on the skills of those involved. I know Silvercube
[good to see you back btw, still no Care Bear game Original (Old) Xbox questions? :(] is an outstanding member who wouldn't steer you wrong and it sounds like the OP knows what he's doing and is researching etc. There probably wouldn't be an issue here and wouldn't be one.

the problem is if we allow this we've had several things happen and I'll just briefly make a few statements and you could see where it leads.

    • I went to the Official Forums and even though they don't support it they do! - people don't realize that most of the posters are volunteers
    • So and so Broke my Xbox so I'm gonna publicly shame and fight with him until we're both banned
    • To go along with the above - in some cases people suggest blatantly wrong things because they like to watch the world burn and think it's hilarious if they can convince a 13 year old to wash parts of their Xbox with soap and water to clean it up. Which
      they do and flames ensue
    • Opening a console can be dangerous, power supplies can have voltage, people might even leave it plugged in and we don't want any Darwin awards given out because of something that was posted here.
Those are just a few of the reasons and I'm sure that ZERO of it applies to anyone here but the guideline is in place for everyone so we have to be blanket otherwise we'd have to list a bunch of scenarios and obviously that's not practical.

As for the old thread, Support was not endorsing self repair. The thread was a year old when they posted and then it was discussing where to get the console repaired and steps to take such as look elsewhere or to find a refurbished console. The Support agent
was merely letting the person know who resurrected the old thread to make a new one.

That's all, nothing against anyone. I'll post back if I hear anything different. I bought an Xbox off Ebay that I don't use for just this reason.... the day my Original dies. Original (Old) Xbox questions? :( Although my NES is still going strong so here's to hoping.

@BobRfromHome Only a few games on the Original Xbox actually offered 1080i HD support. As long as your TV supports that, you'll be able to play those specific games (provided you have component cables) that have 1080i HD (which are only a few of them) So
yes, most of them are just up-scaled 480 Original (Old) Xbox questions? :D

You can see which of your games have HD support by looking at the back of the game case and it will show HDTV highlighted with a check-mark and then usually a number that follows. I don't think that the adapter went up to 1080i for movies though (as you
can play DVDs on your Xbox with the official Microsoft Xbox DVD Movie Playback Kit. (I have fond memories watching the 24 TV series on DVD back in the day when Blockbuster was around).

I believe if you get the official Microsoft Xbox High Definition AV Pack, that should come with component cables. I don't remember exactly what I did, was so long ago. I have component cables that are then plugged into an HDMI output that I bought on Amazon.com
a few years ago. I do notice a difference in most of the games being "less grainy" and it's really nice! Part of the reason why I bought the HDMI output also was because my TV can only handle so many cables at one time.

I hope that answered your question! If anyone else can provide more info, that would be great too. If there's anything else, please ask Original (Old) Xbox questions? :D

@aka Scratch: Thanks, for a more detailed response on the forum policies and clarifying the support question. Good to see you too! Yes, it is important to be careful with the Xbox. It's really sad that Microsoft no longer supports the Original Xbox. I really
wish they would resurrect the Original Xbox LIVE, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only on there playing games again. So many amazing games that I didn't get to play much online because I was mainly playing Halo 2 online!

I also am having some anxiety about my old Xbox being that I've played it so much. I hope because I bought some new parts recently that it will keep my Xbox going for awhile. My main concern is how long the hard drive can last and that is really critical
because you can't move downloadable content like you can with with the more current consoles. I have pretty much most of the downloadable content available on Original Xbox... even bought all of those arcade games from the Xbox Arcade game disk eons ago..
still play it to this day Original (Old) Xbox questions? :D

I'm tempted to buy the official Original Xbox Protection AC Power Cord, as I believe would have saved me from what happened 3 years ago which caused my Xbox to die (the power supply inside my Xbox was a bit burnt when I took it out and swapped it)! I went
through the most craziest story of taking it to a repair shop as Microsoft would not repair it as they no longer supported the system. I called them on the phone, tweeted them, everything >_< So I asked support for their recommendations and they couldn't offer
anything. So I looked up a repair shop nearby where I live. Little did I know the repair shop was a scam and they held my dear Xbox hostage for over 2 years. I reported them to the Better Business Bureau and contacted the police which I had a personal detective
help me as I was one of hundreds that were actually being scammed. I ended up getting my Xbox back from the coroner's office and then went to a more well-know repair shop that Best Buy uses and they told me they couldn't fix it either. So that's what began
my journey of self-repair. I did a lot of research and was so ecstatic when I fixed it myself I was like a little kid again. My brother couldn't believe it either.

As for the scam repair shop, they went to trial and some of them were found guilty! I ended up getting my money back from court (most of of it) and the repair shop is now closed. That is what I call an Xbox soap opera and it was really emotional. Thankfully
    the end result was great.

@Silvercube Aha..! That makes perfect sense. I hadn't considered that the games themselves might be the limiting factor. Looking at the box for the game I was concerned about, I see it -doesn't- have the HDTV box checked. (Guess it pays to pay attention
    to those little details.)

    Thanks for your quick replies.

@BobRfromHome - there's one other tip you can try: if you go to settings on your Original Xbox for High Definition, press the L and R triggers at the same time along with holding in the right and left control sticks at the same which turns on HD for everything
regardless of whether a game has the setting or not Original (Old) Xbox questions? :)

You should see an immediate difference and can switch it back as well doing the same input. Let me know if you see a difference, it works for me. I forgot about that option. You input it on the screen where it shows the 480, 720, and 1080 settings. Original (Old) Xbox questions? :)

    Original (Old) Xbox questions?

I really wish that Original Xbox discussion for self-repair should be considered a different category as the system is no longer able to be repaired by Microsoft Support, leaving consumers, especially those who may have many fond memories of their system,
without many options as even most repair stores no longer work on repairing them.

@Daft Badger, see this thread even shows Support was okay with it :)

    Original (Old) Xbox questions?

Well, to give you piece of mind. I've had my original xbox since day 1 and have never cleaned it and still works just fine...not sure if you remember but the original xbox developed a reputation for being one of the best well built consoles of all time.
So much so that there is a video floating around where someone shot it with a gun and they turned it on and it still worked just fine....i understand your concerns though, [Mod removed: No self-repair suggestions, please]
