Original (Old) Xbox questions?

Sorry, I checked the FAQs and searched the forums but couldn't really find anything about where (if at all) questions about the original Xbox should go here.

A friend just gave me an original Xbox which works just fine, but I had some questions and haven't been able to find much about it these days.

Is there a spot here to ask about these old guys, or does anyone know of another forum that specializes in info about them?

When you say very old Xbox which are you referring to? The original Xbox, on old 360?

Live for the original Xbox was shut down several years ago.

Feel free to ask away here. I still have my Original Xbox hooked up and still play it after all these years. Maybe I can answer a question.

 

Does Xbox have the ability to look them over and service them? I know mine still works and I want to keep it that way. I wanted to get it at least cleaned out from all those years of sitting.

I still have a crystal xbox that works as well as one of the normal ones.

 

Daft Badger or anyone else who would know.. Is there a safe way to crack them open to clean the inside myself. I know it has some build up. I just want to maintain it for the future.

 

Well, to give you piece of mind. I've had my original xbox since day 1 and have never cleaned it and still works just fine...not sure if you remember but the original xbox developed a reputation for being one of the best well built consoles of all time.
So much so that there is a video floating around where someone shot it with a gun and they turned it on and it still worked just fine....i understand your concerns though, [Mod removed: No self-repair suggestions, please]

 

Keep your hands away from the power supply board just to be safe when cleaning the internals. As the gentleman above me has said a can of compressed air and a gentle brushing should do the job

 

Oh and be sure to ground yourself as static electricity can be a killer. I suggest getting a PC screw driver kit with a anti static wrist strap.

 

Yes absolutely as Auswolf mentioned you'll need a screwdriver with the special bits (I think T5 an T10 if my dusty brain recollects), and possibly one other. Get a screwdriver that is magnetic so it can easily hold on to screws as there are some smaller
screws you'll have to unscrew if you want to get further down into the Original Xbox. I've opened my Xbox several times (replaced the DVD drive and power supply). I was lucky that was the cause of my Xbox not working and was able to replace the power supply.
I have so much data on my Xbox hard drive and it really is probably my favorite console of all time.

Take a look at what version your Xbox is on the bottom as there are some small differences in them. Honestly, I am not a tech guru, and taking apart the Original Xbox is not too difficult at all.

There are still games I am playing and would like to finish one day: Fatal Frame II, Sudeki, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, The Bard's Tale, XIII (game is awesome, finally bought it last week!), Phantom Dust.... and some others I would like to try (Phantom
Crash, Enclave...) so many good games

I beat Jet Set Radio Future a few months ago finally after owning that game which came with my Xbox back in the day... I was stuck on a part where I didn't know I was supposed to go up a rail and then grind on a board to get to my destination. When I did
it I was so amazed at how jaw-dropping JSRF is and what you could do in the game. Really enjoyed later on that roller coaster level too, so much fun! Holds up great too. Even bought a component cable to HDMI converter so I have a little bit more better audio
and visual quality

 

Comments have already been removed as discussing self repair is not allowed on the forums,even for the original xbox.

 

I really wish that Original Xbox discussion for self-repair should be considered a different category as the system is no longer able to be repaired by Microsoft Support, leaving consumers, especially those who may have many fond memories of their system,
without many options as even most repair stores no longer work on repairing them.
