Original 360 doesn't play newer games

First off, I'd like to say that this site is a mess. I've been trying for several hours to get answers, but I keep coming up the same steps I've already tried.

I have an original Xbox 360 and I just bought South Park: the stick of truth. When I try to play the game I get an "unrecognized disc" error. I have also had this problem with several newer games (anything released within the last year or so). I have tried
exchanging the disc, cleaning the disc, clearing the cache, nothing works. And again, this is only a problem with newer games, all of my older games work fine. I would greatly appreciated any help resolving this issue.

I'm trying to play LOTR return of the King on my 360.

I'm new to this 360 system but it doesn't want to let me play an original xbox game. I know others have done so. Any help would be appreciated.

 

An Xbox original game not working

Okay I bought a new spider-man 2 an old original Xbox game and it won't work in my 360 it's updated and I have 2 original Xbox 360 hard drives but it's the only original Xbox game that doesn't work

The first thing I would suggest is to make sure your dashboard is up to date. If you are not connected to Live, do so (you don't need Gold) and let the system update if needed. As I looked briefly at your game/app history I can see that this probably isn't
the problem since you have used online apps/games and you appear to have Gold.

Probably what has happened is your older 360 model didn't update the DVD drive when Microsoft updated the disc format to allow for more storage on disc a few years ago. There were a few rare instances where some 360s still could not play games using the
new format. Unfortunately since the model you have has long been out of warranty there is little Microsoft can do in this situation. I am afraid the only way to solve your particular problem would be to purchase a newer model. You might try contacting Customer
Service about it, but I wouldn't be expecting much for the reason already stated. But it doesn't hurt to try.
