Organiser to a child account ?

(super novice xbox mum Here) My son has always used my email and account for his Xbox, however I would like to make it a child account so I can set timer restrictions. How do I move him from the organiser account to a child account without losing all his Fortnite game etc? Thanks ,”

Thanks so much Kyle that’s really helpful! I wish I had looked into it properly years ago haha! Do you have any magic tricks to shut the Xbox down at a certain time each night?? Or after a certain amount of Xbox time ?

Hi Sarah. My name is Kyle and I'm an independent advisor.

Unfortunately, you can't transfer Xbox profiles between Microsoft account's. Your son's Xbox profile is permanently tied to your account and can't be changed to a child account.

If you create a new Microsoft account, you'll also have to create a new Xbox profile, and his progress and purchases in games won't transfer over. This is why it's recommended to set up individual account's for children instead of letting them using your own account.

It's not possible to set screen time limits on an adult account or set an auto shut down timer (this could cause issues if the console shut down in the middle of a game or before the game could save). However I can suggest other methods of tracking screen time, like setting a timer on a different device.

You can also set a break reminder up on the console:

On the Xbox, go to Settings > Preferences > Break reminder. The options allow you to set a reminder for every 30 minutes up to every 2 hours in 30-minute intervals.

Is your account a child account? If so, then parental controls may have blocked it and the parent (organiser) will need to unlock

If it was a child account but you are now an adult but sill within the family account, then you either need the organiser (parent) to unlock purchases or leave the family account

If neither of those are true, then I'm not sure

As my child was also an organiser of the family I had to sign in to their profile and could change their settings on their login. Despite being a child if they’re an organiser it disables parent functions. So anyway I got it working but that’s not the best security feature.

Thanks perhaps as you say removing the account from the family and re-adding them as a member may fix that too.
