    Optical Out DD 5.1 weirdness.

    Ok. Here is my setup.

Cable Box into XB1--->Receiver via HDMI (optical also going from xbox 1 to receiver) ---->Receiver via HDMI---->TV

If I try to play audio via HDMI on Xbox1 at 5.1 DD I get an error. "receiver is not capable of using this signal" or something cheerful like that. I have a feeling that my receiver (6 year old Onkyo) may not be able to use audio from an HDMI cable.

When I set audio to optical out, bit stream, then either DTS or DD, the Xbox1 will play blue ray dvd's on 5.1 but not the signal coming from the cable box, that gets sent as a strange stereo sound even though the receiver says 3/2.1 on the display.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    :)

    HDMI Audio & Optical Audio

Gunjee, you must connect your soundbar to an optical (or red/white analog) audio OUTPUT on your TV, NOT an input as you described.

OrphenCB, you can't select the 5.1/7.1 uncompressed audio options because your setup doesn't support it. Optical out only supports 2-channel uncompressed PCM or compressed DD 5.1 (which Xbox One currently does not support). You also can't send uncompressed
5.1/7.1 PCM to your TV via HDMI because your TV doesn't support that, which the Xbox knows via the HDMI handshake and, thus, disables. Try setting the Xbox to send DTS over its optical out to the receiver if your receiver supports DTS. Otherwise, you'll have
to wait until the Xbox can output DD or get a better/newer receiver... BTW, if/when the Xbox supports DD output over optical, run that directly to your receiver--not via HDMI to your TV then optical out to your receiver. Most TVs will NOT send DD 5.1 from
an HDMI source out via the TV's optical out.

Hmm, I think you're probably right about your older receiver not passing audio through the HDMI port. It seems odd as the standard is supposed to be all about consolidating A/V in one cable, but I think the standard was pretty new then, so who knows. Maybe
you could find out for sure in the receiver's user manual?

As for the cable sound going to stereo, I'm pretty sure that's a current limitation of the Xbox One's HDMI input. Apparently there should be a beta option to enable surround sound to pass through though. Check out this link for more info:

Your receiver might not support bitstreaming at all over HDMI and only optical audio.

PCM is what you really want to use with HDMI as the Xbox one supports 5.1 and 7.1 uncompressed PCM which is superior to Dolby Digital.

Dolby Digital support was added for older receivers, media with its highest sound configuration being compressed media (DVD DTS or DD), and surround sound headsets. If you have an HDMI receiver, even the first HDMI specification offers support for surround
sound PCM. Bitstreaming formats like DD and DTS came in later revisions so it might be that your receiver was behind on those revisions, but should at least play 5.1 LPCM.

  6. when will 5.1 be available through the optical output port? I know bitstream and DTS is available, but that configuration doesn't give any output to the center channel speaker

  7. Hi I've got an Onkyo a/v amp roughly the same age and I get all the sound formats ie DD, DD+, dts and dts master audio. I'm putting all my equipment connected through the amp via hdmi. I'm at a loss why your not getting all the sound options.
