Thats probably why I like it so much more than the past Fallouts. I felt that they were too sterile and RPG heavy for their own good. It took the fun out of it for me. I like RPGs, but not Japanese inspired. I felt the VATS system broke up the battles, because it was relied on so heavily in the first few titles. Whereas now, its a choice. A feature, instead of a gameplay element. Which goes a long way for those that just want to play it like an action RPG. Yet the choice is still there for those that like the VATs system.

Im having a ton of fun just exploring. As I said prior, there is a peaceful serenity to the burnt out environments. Like an Earth starting over again, humans getting that second chance to work with nature, as opposed to against it. Modern technology in a prehistoric-like setting. Just you, a few other people and nature(well, a radiation exposed nature anyways).

It combines incredible visuals(at least on the X), sound, exploration and gameplay... to create a relaxing, fun way to lose yourself in a day. Fallout 3 and New Vegas are similar to Oblivion and Skyrim in their handling, they aren't JRPG inspired like the first titles. The shooting in 3 and NV isn't as good, but everything else is better.

VATS is a feature instead of a requirement, just like with Fallout 4.

Fallout 4 just dumbs a lot of the mechanics down and turns it into more of an adventure shooter than an actual RPG.

One of the biggest issues is the character and dialogue. Fallout 3 and NV gave you a ton of choices for who you wanted to be as a character. Since Fallout 4 is voiced, and all the dialogue is forced through that 4-option wheel, it severely limits who you can be. The worst person you can be in Fallout 4 is a sarcastic asshole who's still a loving parent.

Fallout 3 gave you the chance to be downright evil. One of the first towns you encounter, Megaton, is likely a place you'll make a base of operations of sorts. And later in the game, another character gives you the opportunity to set off the bomb in the center of the town. You can just straight up blow up the entire town and kill everyone in it, for no other reason than because you want to and the guy who wants you to blow it up finds it to be an eyesore on the horizon. You're literally blowing up an entire town because some rich guy doesn't like the way it affects the view from his penthouse apartment.

You can lie, you can cheat, you can steal, you can manipulate characters to do your bidding, and the entire game molds around your choices. Entire factions and characters will be locked off depending on your actions.

Sure, the karma system was a bit simplistic and black and white, but the solution was not to just remove it like they did in Fallout 4. There is literally no karma system in Fallout 4. The only pseudo-karma system in the game is certain actions are liked by certain companions, and other actions are disliked by certain companions. But it's so simplistic and broken, because if a companion likes hacking, you can just do whatever you want that pisses off that companion, and then just hack 20 computers and then you're back to being super in their favor like nothing happened.

If Fallout 3 was open, New Vegas was even more so. New Vegas is probably one of the best examples of an open world RPG ever made, because you can literally choose your story. You can side with whatever faction you want, or you can say fuck it and just start your own faction. It's a phenomenal experience.

Good post. Maybe Ill have to try 3 again, since its got an X patch. Wont be such eye shock, after seeing 4s beauty. I know at the time I played them, I just couldnt get into them. Maybe 4 opend up the door to appreciate them more. We will see. I do remember the previews made it seemed like if you didnt use VATs, that you werent going to kill anything. Which I think was one of my biggest turn offs. So maybe I just didnt give it a chance. We will see what happens after I finish 4.

actually it's better to have that gate closed. otherwise if your coming from the cathedral you can get swarmed with to many enemies. if you want a shortcut it's faster to use the elevator from firelink to cathedral and run around that way.

The funny thing is that the undead which closed the gate on me ran back after he pulled the lever. He probably thought "right, now that's done I will kill this imposter". Little did he know the gate was about to come crashing
down on his skull... instant death. Pretty hilarious.
