1. Open NAT with Dynamic IP?

Dec 12, 2015 9:07 AM

My ISP only offers a Dynamic IP Address for Internet use for whatever reason. I'm wanting to use my Xbox to communicate and play games with my friends and need my NAT Type set to Open. I previously set up a local DMZ on my Time Capsule but was having frequent
issues with Internet connectivity (but it did connect with my modem dynamic and my router static). I contacted my ISP and they told me that my modem is set to Dynamic and that they only offer a Dynamic service. Is there a way I can assign a specific IP address
to my console WITH my router set to Dynamic? Summary: My modem is set to Dynamic and I can't change it. My router is set to Dynamic. Is there a way I can open all of the necessary ports for my Xbox One with my router being set to Dynamic?

:)

2. XBL (static IP) not recieving OPEN NAT

When I use DMZ I can have my uPnP turned on and it doesn't really affect anything.

My router is really wierd; it gives my moderate nat with a static IP, and open with a dynamic one.

Is there a way that uPnP is not working for static IPs, just the dynamic one? & would it help to fill out that form above (with the X Y Z )

nat type moderate

You both will not be able to have an open nat by port fowarding, you have to use dynamic ips on your xbox and IF your router uses UPNP the way microsoft designes it, it will give both of you an open nat.

be sure to toggle UPNP and make sure your firmware is up to date on your router.

Open NAT with Dynamic IP?

Most residential ISPs only offer dynamic IP addresses for their customers. Typically, if they offer static IP addresses it is something that you have to pay for.

Trying to follow your thought here. Yes, with most if not all routers you can set devices up to have static IP addresses on your internal network. You can use the reserve IP approach which will reserve that specific IP address for a specific device which
is identified by the MAC address of the device.

When you say your router is set to dynamic exactly what are you referring to? Routers come with a default static IP address which is what is used when accessing the router. Routers are used to dynamically assign addresses to the devices within the internal
network which is usually the best approach but you do have devices that work much better with static IP addresses (i.e., Printers, game consoles, ets...) and those IP addresses can be set as static through the router configuration process.

I would try using UPnP instead of port forwarding at least initially and let the router handle the traffic. It is much easier if it will handle it automatically. If not then move into more manual configuration.

conjunction with a public IP address, which has nothing to do with your NAT's behaviour. That is, an IP address being dynamically, or static learned from your ISP.

1. Open the AirPort Admin Utility. (It is installed in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Macintosh computer, and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on computers using Windows.)
2. With the Utility open select your device from the menu on the left.
3. Select Advanced from the menu at the top.
4. Select the tab labeled IPv6 Firewall.
5. Check the option to Allow Teredo tunnels.
6. Select Update.
It may also be useful to us if you're able to post up the make and model of your modem. To verify if this is a standard modem, or if it's actually a modem combined with a router/NAT.

Apple doesn't support UPnP, as it has its own protocol, Bonjour (zeroconf).

Make sure this protocol are properly setup on your Time Capsule. Here's how:

1. Open the AirPort Admin Utility. (It is installed in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Macintosh computer, and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on computers using Windows.)
2. With the Utility open select your device from the menu on the left.
3. Select Internet from the menu at the top.
4. Select NAT from the sub menu.
5. Check the Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol check box.
Post back and let us know how that goes.

Great information taidara. Thanks for updating the post. Not familiar with Apple configuration. I will definitely file that information away for future reference.

7. Reserve IP address?—meaning I can have my router set to dynamic (assigning new IP addresses to my devices often) but be able to give my Xbox One a static IP address? Yes, Apple unfortunately hates gaming consoles. I set my router to Static, enabled Teredo
Tunneling, and put my Xbox One on a local DMZ and it worked fine—sometimes. I was told by my ISP that my modem is set to Dynamic and that my router should be set to Dynamic as well (although I'm skeptical about this).

9. I reserved an IP address relative to my Xbox One's MAC Address and set up a local DMZ that way. Router still set to Dynamic - alternate solution to strict NAT if someone can't or won't switch to Static.

Please keep in mind that NAT doesn't react differently, in regard to whether you've been dynamically, or statically assigned with a public IP address from your ISPs realm. The packet structure looks the same, and NAT behave exactly the same. The only difference
is that with static assignment, the IP information is manually configured and doesn't involve DHCP/Bootstrap.

11. I'm aware of the difference but I wasn't able to connect to the Internet with my router set to Static and my modem Dynamic, so I was trying to solve that first. I thought I would need my router set to Static in order to set up a local DMZ, but I created
one anyways with my router set to Dynamic.
but I wasn't able to connect to the Internet with my router set to Static and my modem Dynamic
Are you referring to the WAN interface of your Time Capsule? Where you can choose different WAN connection modes,
and where one of these is "Static IP"?
