Only one xbox controller works at a time

Both are paired and both work to control the xbox main menus and even game menus. But, once you get into any game and as an example try to each choose a character, only controller 1 will work. I can make either controller be controller 1 but the 2nd will
never function. This happens for all games.

Ideas?

I can create multiple profiles and I can buzz each controller. But, I cannot get each controller to save a unique profile. Once I assign the second, the first one defaults back to the second profile.

Do you have both controllers assigned to the same profile, as when your trying to use 2 controllers you need to assign the 2nd account if that makes any sense

Thanks for coming to the forums with your question. Are you signing into two different profiles, or are you using a profile and a guest account? If two different profiles you can

assign a controller to each profile. For example: when you use controller A profile A logs in and controller b will log profile B in.

Once you are signed in with one profile. On the 2nd controller try going to the far right and sign in as a guest (it will show up as your gamertag(1) and that may fix your issue.

I suggest you do a factory reset on your console but keep all the games and apps to see if you get back to normal.
