Online messages on xbox1

When I am signed in, I can see messages that people send me. But I cannot respond to them, even people on my friend list. When I try it tells me to go to the xbox support website where it asks for a phone number to send a text message to.

Sadly i think not i found this on the xbox site

To find out, try this:

1. Sign in at account.live.com/reputationcheck.
2. Add your phone number, then select Send code.
3. Get the code from the text message sent to your phone, enter it on the webpage, and select Submit.
4. If you’re using your Xbox, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to turn it off, then turn it on and sign back in. If you’re on a PC or mobile device, sign out of the Xbox app, then sign back in.

You can send messages on Xbox live via the Xbox page and log in.

If you're referring to account security, you can get the email sent to a computer.

Thank you. I guess I won't be able to use this. I do not own a cell phone. So I cannot get a text message. I wish they could use email instead. But it doesn't matter.

Thanks for the reply. What is happening is that Microsoft wants you to verify your account to allow you to send messages. This often happens when you make a new account or haven't used your account in a while.

As stated on our support article
'Why Can't I send messages from my Xbox One or the Xbox App?'

Follow these steps:

1. Sign in at
   account.live.com/reputationcheck.
2. Add your phone number, then select Send code.
3. Get the code from the text message sent to your phone, enter it on the webpage, and select
   Submit.
4. After submitting the code; press and hold the power button on the Xbox for
   10 seconds to turn it off, unplug the power cord from the back give it 30 seconds and plug it back in then turn it on and sign back in. If you’re on a PC or mobile device, sign out of the Xbox app, then sign back in.
